Gr 10 Up-This collection of literary criticism presents excerpts from essays about the writings of 11 authors. Most are contemporary (Paula Gunn Allen, Maria Campbell, Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Linda Hogan, Wendy Rose, and Leslie Marmon Silko) but a few wrote in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (E. Pauline Johnson, Mourning Dove, Sarah Winnemucca, and Zitkala-Sa). Each chapter presents a brief biographical sketch, excerpts from critical reviews, and a bibliography. The straightforward presentation assumes that students have an understanding of literary criticism; this is not a book for beginners in this type of analysis. Still, for those who are curious about any of these women after reading some of their poetry or novels, the volume brings together an introductory collection of commentary without overwhelming readers.-Lisa Mitten, University of Pittsburgh, PA
