This review is from: 100 Native Americans Who Shaped American History (Paperback)
100 Native Americans Who Shaped American History is the latest in the outstanding and very highly recommended Bluewood Books "100" series. The featured Native Americans range from an 18th century Iroquois who founded a religion which is still practiced today, to the first Native American elected to the United States Congress, to the woman who became the first Native American to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Each individual page features a black-and-white photograph and a succinct and informative biographical description of an influential Native American, ranging from the 1500's down to the modern day. A map in the upper page corner allows "at-a-glance" information as to where each of the notable Native American individuals lived. An excellent, quick-study resource for classroom and personal reference shelves, 100 Native Americans Who Shaped American History is a welcome addition to school and library Native American Studies collections.

This review is from: 100 Native Americans Who Shaped American History (Paperback)
A worthwhile, somewhat unique history book, that helps to round out a young person's understanding of American history and helps them get beyond the cowboy and Indians, Pilgrims and Indians stereotypes of Native Americans. It helps young people and older children to view Indians as intelligent, educated individuals who contributed to the history of the United States in positive ways. Many children are fully unaware that there are Native Americans today throughout the United States, and that many are fully integrated into American society. Teachers should be aware of teaching children, not only the history of American Indians, but also where they have fit into to modern U.S. History, and where Native Americans are today in the United States. This is of much interest to children, but it is not often explored in children's social studies books or lessons. A very worthwhile book that helps round out a child's understanding on this subject. All who live in American should have a positive view towards Native Americans, since they were here before any whites, and before the introduction of Africans to the United States. The book is suitable for fifth through eight grades. |
