From Booklist
Here, users will find meticulous research and historical perspectives on a wide variety of often underrepresented subjects. Native Americans in Sports is a thorough look at the impact Native Americans have had on club, college, professional, and Olympic sports in the U.S and Canada. Alphabetical entries provide detailed accounts of the lives and careers of individuals, teams, organizations, institutions, and specific sports, including traditional games of skill. Signed essays provide background and historical context for social issues such as racism, adaptation, and assimilation and also address contemporary controversies, such as mascots and gambling. Some topics cover familiar ground. There are lengthy articles on Jim Thorpe, Will Rogers, and Tiger Woods (also found in the African American volume). However, lesser known figures, such as Fred Sasakamoose, the first full-blooded Indian to play in the National Hockey League, are also included. Women are well represented.
Occasional black-and-white archival photographs accompany the text. A list of entries by category, a general index, an index by sport, a general bibliography, and a chronology provide support. Public, academic, and secondary school libraries will want to offer this title. RBB
