4.0 out of 5 stars A useful reference, June 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Native Americans in Sports (Hardcover)
This two-volume work offers encyclopedia-style entries on hundreds of athletes with at least partial Native American ancestry. Some names are famous--Tiger Woods and Johnny Bench, for example--others considerably less so. The quality of the work is somewhat uneven, however, no doubt owing to the wide range of contributors who wrote the entries. The entry on Lou Sockalexis, for example, is brief and unreliable. It reports that he spent two years in the major leagues, hitting .436 and .444. In fact he spent parts of three years, hitting .338, .224, and .273, stats easily found in any baseball encyclopedia.
