Native Artists series
Billy Soza Warsoldier of Cahuilla and Apache descent was born in 1949 and raised on the Soboba Indian Reservation in southern California. His Apache grandfather along with his cousin rode out to California on horseback. During his time in prison, Billy lost all visitation rights and was confined to his quarters for his refusal to cut his hair to the length specified by the grooming policy. The state of California also added time to his sentence as part of this punishment. He endured these injustices due to his strong spiritual beliefs. Through it all, Billy has kept expressing his creativity through his art. Billy refers to himself as “not your average savage.”
