Format: Audio CD
Jeff Lang has come a long way since this album, originally released in 1996. He has developed as a guitarist, as a songwriter, and as a composer. At this point in his career, he was still playing music that didn't break too far from blues and folk-rock. His style incorporated intricate finger-picking, precise slide work and, somewhat unusual for acoustic blues musicians, an understanding of dynamics rather than simply playing full-steam-ahead at all times. It is also interesting to note that his playing on this album seems directly related to Chris Whitley's Living With The Law, since Lang and Whitley would later collaborate on Dislocation Blues. However, Lang would go on to do better albums that are more conceptually advanced, sonically adventurous and skillfully played (I am particularly fond of Half Seas Over and You Have To Dig Deep..., as well as his live albums). This is still a very good album, though, and provides an interesting picture of Lang at the beginning of his career.

Further listening: Chris Whitley, Living With The Law. Catfish Keith, A Fistful of Riffs. Bob Brozman, Blues Reflex. David Jacobs-Strain, Stuck On The Way Back. Rainer Ptacek, Live At The Performance Center.

Australian Jeff Lang is truly a unique package. Unbelievable skills on mainly acoustic guitar and lap steel (but with deft use of effects), intelligent lyrics that never fail to tell a story in an interesting way, and a warm, soulful voice. Jeff is a living musical treasure: this is some of his now very hard to find early work. Chase it down before it is no longer available.
