I've been playing with drum machines and groove boxes since the first SR16 to several of my MPCs. I have a DSI Tempest (love it!) and have worked a fair amount with Ableton Live. That said if I lost everything and had to start over there would be no question where I would start: Maschine. It's so well thought out, infinitely expandable and almost a full blown DAW. For six bones you get what would have cost tens of thousands back when everything was dedicated hardware. I would also highly recommend taking the Maschine course at Dubspot. All of the above are money well spent!

product came in. it's in good shape and everything, BUT it didn't come with the free 2.0 Maschine updated software. It came with 1.8, so now I'll have to pay $100 for the updated software!! if you're buying this in 2014, get it from their website and not amazon..

I have been using the Maschine Mk2 for about 2 years.
Here's the good, bad, and ugly points:

Good:
Easy to use software (Maschine only that is).
Almost everything you can do on screen with a PC can be done using the Maschine hardware.
Folks familiar with MPC series workflow can easily migrate over to Maschine.
Equipment seems pretty solid.
Pads feel good and can be assigned colors.
The Dual screens are a good size and meet their purpose.
Maschine hardware faces are interchangeable.
Large library of available samples and kits.
Very good sampler.
Compatible with Virtual synths (VST).

Bad:
Hardware is not stand alone; it depends on a computer (USB) to use.
You need an audio interface or quality sound card to make it work as it should.
You need a moderate to powerful PC or Mac otherwise audio playback might suffer.
Every thing that doesn't come with the Maschine Mk2 will cost you money (plugins, synths, everything).
Company nickels and dimes you for everything.
Although the dual screens are nice, they don't pivot. NI offers you an angular base mount that slightly tilts the device.
But guess what... it's not free. NI charges you for it.

Very bad telephone customer support. It doesn't exist.
Takes a long time to install software... even longer if you're installing something like komplete.
All instructions come on a CD. It should've come with an instruction booklet as well. A video tutorial disc would've be even greater.
Although its appearance is customizable with faceplates, you won't find artsy faceplates anywhere or knobs and buttons for that matter.

Maschine versions prior to 2.0 do not provide a good graphical representation of 1-3 bar patterns.

I have had Maschine for 4 years.

I have owned an MV8800, and currently own an MC808 so fully understand samplers, grooveboxes and sequencers. I also own several hardware synthesizers, and run a powerful PC & DAW in my small scale recording studio.

This is simply not a good product. I can only conclude that for NI, the purpose of Maschine is to drive sales of sample (expansion) packs and Komplete, as for sure the capabilities of Maschine in its own right are sub standard.

The Sequencer
The sequencer is VERY weak, lacking features found on pretty much every hardware sequencer the last 15 years, and its capabilities as software are easily surpassed by free/donationware midi sequencers. As a sequencer it would be a joke, but its not funny. Any MPC, MC, MV, SY and synth workstation has sequencing abilities that FAR surpass this.

The Sampler
1. You cannot record audio tracks. period. Any linear recording must be done as a sample. This means you need a sequenced event to start sample playback to initiate your recorded "track"
2. The sampler is just OK. It is not flexible.. for example, if you are desiring a fluid workflow, it would be nice if you can (as it allows you to) set up the sample playback mode prior to recording. It then of course, changes to its default mode as soon as you hit record. You cannot change the default mode, and this mode has changed over software versions.

As VST host
Good luck using non NI VST plugins. most will load, but good luck finding presets, or saving presets.

Inadequate routing, poor/frustrating integration with a DAW environment (Maschine as a VST), and a clear focus on sound packs vs functionality means this is not a good purchase.. used prices reflect this.

I'm just starting out with making music on the computer, went to guitar center and tried out ableton launchpad first. I did touch the macschine for a few minutes, and just remember thinking "omg the quality of that freakin controller..." I ended up returning launchpad, (which was still super cool) but just completely fell in love with the MK2.

Started out with the 1.0 version of the software, which was intuitive enough, but now upgraded to 2.0 which is just amazingly simple to get started. I've messed around with ableton live a tiny bit, pro tools a tiny bit and reason as well. You may end up importing your stems into those DAWs but the 2.0 software is excellent in my opinion.

The colors and feel of this control are just unreal.

Couldn't be happier.
