4.0 out of 5 stars Superior disco "oldies" act compilation..., May 4, 2003
By fussyfreddy (Wilmington, DE) - See all my reviews
Everyone knows Odyssey's debut album was something special. Later albums steadily diminished, although even at the end a trifle like "Inside Out" balanced sexist lyrics with a gliding production that recalled the sophisticated, bittersweet "Native New Yorker" schtick that made Odyssey famous.

How wonderful that this compilation happens to include most of their first album (including the magnificent "Easy Come, Easy Go/Hold de' Mota Down") and the best of the rest, including thier odd but winning cover of Lamont Dozier's "Going Back To My Roots."

Anyone who remembers only the awful late 80's remake of "One-Two-Three (Shake your Body Down)" is in for a shock; the original was a stripped-down sort of tribal bubble-gum, unlike any disco record I've ever heard. Not to overpraise, but it's very good and above all, ORIGINAL.

The ballad cuts aren't as good as the stompers, but are quite listenable. Sound quality is standard. In short, a bargain...

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just "Native New Yorker", October 3, 2005
Yes, "Native New Yorker" is the song everybody knows, but Odyssey had more good tunes than just that one. "Don't Tell Me, Tell Her" was a smash radio hit back in 1979 on New York's two disco radio stations, WBLS and WKTU. "Use it Up, Wear it Out" was Odyssey's biggest hit in England, hitting the No. 1 spot on the pop chart! And "Inside Out" is a dance floor favorite as well. It's great that the 12" single versions are included on this CD. But the whole CD is worthwhile. Don't sell Odyssey short just because the mass public only knows "Native..."

By teresa matos (portugal) - See all my reviews
The song "going back to my roots" makes me remember when I was 18 years. It's the more importante song for me in that time.
