The Second Great Native Orchid Book, May 16, 2011
This review is from: The Native Orchids of the United States and Canada Excluding Florida (Hardcover)
I bought Carlyle Luer's second book on native orchids ("The Native Orchids of the United States and Canada Excluding Florida") through an independent used book store after having two failures to acquire it by internet order (one bookseller sent "The Native Orchids of Florida," which I already had and another sent a copy that, while perfect in all other ways, had a very strong odor to which I was immediately allergic!) The third time proved a success.
This is only said to provide background on my purchase of this volume and all of the booksellers were very good about refunding money or (in the case of the last) providing an excellent odor-free copy. The book was worth all the hassle in the end, as it completes Luer's study on North American orchids (he ever throws in a few introduced Hawaiian orchids). The photos, like in the Florida volume, are wonderful, the descriptions are thorough and the New York Botanical Garden is to be commended in the production of both books. The two volumes form a excellent reference library (keeping in mind that there have been some taxonomic changes) and should be owned by anybody interested in the North American orchid flora.
