3.0 out of 5 stars Questionable treatment of the migration theory, June 5, 2009
This review is from: Native People, Native Ways Series (Native People Native Ways Series, Vol 1) (Paperback)
Since I am one-sixteenth Native American, I am always interested in and generally support causes in favor of the descendents of my ancestors. This extends to books about Native American culture and history, which is why I read this book. One of the themes of this book is an examination of the theory that the ancestors of Native Americans migrated to the American continents over the Bering Strait. The argument is that this theory is incorrect, and a few points of evidence are cited. Unfortunately, the points are few and nowhere near compelling, the most convincing evidence is of course DNA as well as the primary facial features of Native Americans.
The remainder of the book is reasonable history of the people of the American continents and the horrific acts of the European interlopers as they came, saw gold, conquered and destroyed. One of the saddest facts, dealt with in this book, is when the Spanish soldiers, under orders from a priest, destroyed nearly every written record of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. It will always remain one of the greatest intellectual disasters of all time.
