Bluetooth V2.1 and Auto-Reconnect Technology

I really wanted to love this handset. There are many things that are right with this, but there are some important things that are wrong.

First of all, the looks is great. Sleek and modern, this is a great item for the office desk. Not only do I always know where my phone is, it lets me charge it when I can get it to sit correctly. Yeah, if you DON'T have a cover on your iPhone and you use the adapter, the phone sits perfectly to charge. If you DO have a cover on your phone and don't want to have to take the cover off every time you want to dock the phone, you have to remove the adapter and sit the phone exactly right in order to avoid the warning about the accessory not designed to charge. On many occasions, I think I have the phone docked correctly to charge, only to hear the little chirp later when something knocks the base and the phone moves a little.

Initially, I had no trouble with audio on the phone, but after several weeks of use, I find that I have to speak louder because people are complaining they can't hear me. Even when volume isn't an issue, I get a lot of comments about the sound quality having 'echo' or sounding 'hollow'. I think this is more a Bluetooth issue than anything, but it's disappointing nonetheless.

Bluetooth syncing is fast and easy. Easy answer button on the inside of the handset is very nice for connect/disconnect of calls.

I've since moved the handset to the bedside table and figure if I have to answer a call in the middle of the night, I'm not going to be so concerned about audio quality. I just want to grab the handset and find out what's going on. Hopefully, I'll put the correct end to my ear, since you can't tell the difference due to the style of the handset.

When this works, it is pretty slick. I'm using a Verizon iPhone 4 w/ it and am generally pleased.

The good:

It looks great and the handset feels solid and sounds good. The handset makes a nice thunk when put in the cradle. It has good range--I can carry it upstairs or outside up to 50 feet away from the base and still have a strong signal. Nice. It's pretty tough; I've dropped it several times. Oops. Once a little piece of something broke loose inside and clicked around for a while--but a good hard shake stopped that. Must have fixed itself. :) If this is the only bluetooth device you will pair your phone with, it should work well.

The not so good:

For the amount of $ this thing costs, it should really work perfectly and the iPhone should mount smoothly, but it doesn't. Pairing is easy, but getting the moshi to talk w/ the phone isn't entirely reliable. Sometimes I'll pull into the driveway from the commute talking on my earpiece and the moshi headset will grab the signal. Hello, you there? Yet other times the moshi simply won't find the phone--have to mount the iPhone and turn the moshi off and on.

Speaking of mounting in the dock, the fit is not perfect. I have to wiggle the phone a bit--indeed, after updating to ios5, getting the phone to recognize the dock can require multiple mounts and some wiggling. Annoying. (The fix is to lock the iPhone first before mounting.) The button controls on the handset aren't intuitive either--they are different from other bluetooth headset controls.

If you use multiple bluetooth headsets (I use three different ones) the moshi will get confused. It's annoying when the phone rings and the handset is not connected. It should connect automatically when mounted (especially when all other bluetooth headsets are turned off), but doesn't all the time.

Keep those contacts clean; if they get cruddy, the handset won't charge and will power down.

If you get the white one, and you are picky, you may be annoyed by the seam in the white handset. It collects grime and is hard to clean--and thus you have a pristine white handset with a dark line it. That seam should be tighter.

These are minor annoyances. I am generally happy with the moshi and use it everyday without much fuss. If I had it to do over and knew what I know now, I would buy it again--but maybe w/out the dock.

I originally bought this device when I had an iPhone 4 on IOS 5.0.1 and I was pretty happy with it. Sound quality is good, but not great, but it is a great and comfortable design if you are a 'talker'. The problems came when I got a new iPhone 4S on IOS 5.1.1. This phone which was easy to pair with my old phone would not pair with my new 4S. Frustrated, I tried to pair it with a couple friends iPhones (some 4 some 4S, all on IOS 5.1.1. Guess what; none of them with pair with the MM03i. I tried every method imaginable to get a hold of Native Union, and after almost a month, there is still no answer. If I were rating this product on the hardware on IOS 5.0.1 I would rate it 4 stars, however, with Native Union's complete lack of customer service, they are lucky to get 1 star. Beware of buying anything from a company that refuses to respond to issues as blatant as this with their product. It is not compatible with IOS 5.1.1, unless you paired your phone with it prior to updating to IOS 5.1.1

--update-- in late 2012 I was able to get a hold of someone at the company, and they did finally replace my defective handset. Would have re-rated for 5 stars except for the runaround they gave me, but it is solidly 4 stars when it works.
