i used the berries for multiple loads of laundry. i wasn't impressed when they left a residue on my black t-shirt. i can't get it to wash out, either. my clothes didn't seem as clean after using the berries for a few weeks. i've gone back to my regular powder detergent. i'm still looking for something better, though. i wish the berries had been the answer, but they just...

I have been using these for 7 months and have been very happy with them. I am so glad to buy a laundry-cleaning product that does not come in a plastic jug, that does not leave a soap residue on my clothing or in my washer, and that cleans our clothes efficiently!

My fiancee, who has a very labor-intensive, sweaty, chemical-laden job, reports that even his work clothes come out of the washer smelling like nothing. Which is a huge improvement over the stinky pile of clothes he tosses in there! He likes that there is no scent on the clothes after they come out of the washer (no stench, no chemicals, no flowers, no perfume, just "clean").

The little bag is very durable and stays closed in the wash (we tie the drawstring in a knot for security). They also successfully run through the dryer. We have a front loading maytag commercial quality washer and a standard maytag gas dryer.

I purchased the 2 lb. bag, and I'm excited to finish it, so I can find a new use for the bag, as well. Reusable produce bag...travel lingerie bag... toiletries bag...etc.

I put "samples" of soap nuts from my big bag, into the little bags, and give to loved ones (I usually stuff the bag for them and tell them to store them in a ziploc bag or glass jar and only use about 5 or so nuts per "use", which equals about 5 loads. This way, they can get quite a few trials of them and have some on hand while waiting for their own shipment to arrive!). They sell a three-pack of the bags on amazon.

TIP 1: we keep a make-shift dry-erase board & marker on the wall by our washing machine to tally the washings with those IIII-slash line markings, using two lines for especially heavy or dirty loads. Once the nuts in the sack are washer-spent, we erase the markings on the board, dump the nuts into a big jug (for later boiling) and refill the sack. This is much easier than trying to remember/calculate how many uses the nuts had or have left (especially when two people use the same sack at different times).

The next three tips aren't about the direct use of this specific product, but since they are eco-laundry related, and about my general use of the product, I thought I'd add them:

TIP 2: Since these nuts don't attack stains, I also purchased (from Amazon) a spray bottle of BioKleen BacOut, which I keep in my laundry room for stains and problem spots. (I keep also one on each floor, for carpet spots.) Works better than other natural stain removers I have tried.

TIP 3: I don't use fabric softener, but I do put a few drops of essential oil in the fabric softener dispenser. I like how it makes my clothes smell and I think it helps repel mosquitoes as I haven't gotten bitten since I began doing this. I used to get bit very often, and others are getting bitten more then I am now.

TIP 4: In the dryer, I use organic wool dryer balls (bought on Amazon), with some drops of pure essential oil (usually lavender or peppermint). I put the drops on the balls and then toss them in for a brief Air Fluff (no heat) to dry the oil before I put my clothes in the dryer. No icky chemical (or expensive natural) separate fabric softener needed!

Disclosure: Amazon Verified Purchase: NaturOli Soap Nuts / Soap Berries. 2 lbs. (320+ loads). These nuts are the same product, in a different quantity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product!, September 19, 2011
This review is from: NaturOli Soap Nuts / Soap Berries. 1/2 lb. (80+ loads) USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC! "Select" seedless. Rated "best" eco-friendly, natural laundry detergent. Green Dot Award Winner. 100% chemical free. + Extreme 18X trial - A $5.95 FREE BONUS! (Kitchen)
Soap nuts are extremely economical to use, and they contain no chemicals. If you're looking for ways to reduce the chemical exposure in your household, this is one of the easiest, most effective, most affordable ways you can do that.

How I use soap nuts: I put 5 soap nuts into the small cloth bag (included with purchase) and tie it shut. I drop it into my top-loading washer along with my dirty laundry and run the load as usual. (Note: I wash everything in cold water.) When the washer stops, I remove the bag of soap nuts and set it on top of the dryer to dry. When the soap nuts feel squishy inside the bag, I know it's time to dump them out and refill with 5 fresh soap nuts. I usually get 5 wash loads per bagful. I do not use any chemicals such as fabric softener or dryer sheets. I do, however, put vinegar into the final rinse dispenser of my washer (1/4 cup in summer when it's humid and 1/2 cup in winter when it's dry). The vinegar reduces static electricity for clothes dried in the dryer. (This is something I've done for years, before I started using soap nuts.)

Our laundry includes the following: towels, sheets, my clothes, my husband's clothes (he's a professional painter, he works on our vehicles, and he does yard work - so his stuff can get pretty dirty), and cloth diapers when the grandchildren visit. I've tried to determine what our laundry smells like after it's been washed and dried either in the dryer or on the clothesline. All I can say is that it smells "clean." The soap nuts don't seem to impart any particular scent onto the laundry.

We keep a notepad by our washer on which we record each wash load and note whenever we start a fresh bag of soap nuts. I probably won't do this forever, but being a new soap nuts user myself, I wanted to see how long they lasted and how the cost per load worked out. We have now used soap nuts for a total of 68 laundry loads. We've used 5.8 oz. of the 4 lb. package we purchased, which, at my purchase price of $49.95, works out to a cost of $.07 per load! The average number of soap nuts we have used per load is 5.7.

The literature that came with the soap nuts said that they have other household cleaning uses besides laundry. I haven't tried them on my dishes or anything else yet, but one of these days I just might.

If you aren't convinced yet to buy soap nuts in a large quantity, please buy a trial size and use them for a few loads. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised!

I have tried other brands of soap nuts over the years but have been impressed with the quality of NaturOli soap nuts vs the others. My laundry comes out clean and fresh I like that I'm not using chemicals on my clothes. I would recommend this product to others.

NaturOli is my first exposure to soap nuts. I am quite impressed. They seem to do a great job cleaning our kids' clothes (I still pre-treat stains), and mine and my husband's clothes. However, I do NOT use them on my husband's work clothes. (He's a machinist, and his work clothes get so filthy and greasy, they leave a big, black ring around the inside of the washer, even AFTER washing them TWICE in warm water!!) The thing I love most about soap nuts, is that I know I'm not putting any chemicals onto/into my children's clothes. Our third child has bouts of eczema, so having a natural, gentle way to clean his clothes has really helped his skin. Our next baby is due any day, so I'm looking forward to trying soap nuts on poopy cloth diapers! Overall, if you want to save money and use something natural and non-irritating, I would definitely recommend soap nuts. And the soap nuts from NaturOli has been very nice and consistent. I have no reservations about recommending them!

Second purchase and will buy again. Going to buy a bar of lye soap for spot cleaning before when gardening season begins but otherwise I like it. Clothes are odorless and just feel clean.

My only regret is that i bought this dinky sized one and not the 4 lb one =P

AMAZING! You have to let it soak in hot water first or boil it first.
That was my mistake in the beginning but now that i boiled it first, fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars NaturOli Nuts Soap Nuts - Best Quality Natural Laundry Detergent, August 19, 2008

I have tried three other companies that sell soap nuts in North America.

Other companies had smaller soap nuts and a lot of broken pieces that seemed to look like they were from a bunch of different types of soap nut trees. But more importantly, I made soap nut tea for other cleaning uses from every company I tried and the only one I can say this about is NaturOli. The second the cool tap water hit the soap nuts in the pot I saw lots of bubbles. That tells me the saponin level in NaturOli's is really high.

I am completely sold on NaturOli as a company and especially their soap nuts. Their soap nuts are larger than any others I tried and almost 100% whole nuts so measuring is so simple.

They also ship in completely recycled packaging. So not only is their product environmentally friendly, but so is the way they do business.

I am driving my family and friends crazy recommending they switch from packaged laundry detergent to soap nuts. If you tried other companies already you really need to try NaturOli. You'll see and feel the difference in your laundry right away.

I started using soap nuts years ago and have been a believer ever since. I even used them in when I was in the Army -- and believe me, that was a fun one to explain to my Drill Sergeant.

These clean your clothes thoroughly but don't leave any residual smell. You don't have to use any fabric softener because there isn't any residue to stiffen your clothes -- which is why fabric softener is needed with traditional detergents.

If you have clothing that is soiled to the point that it might stain, you will need to pretreat. Soap nuts do not work for stain removal. You can use things like baking soda, vinegar, club soda, and sometime just a little elbow grease, to get stains out without using the commercial chemical concoctions. You can always find what will work best with a google search and you'd probably be surprised how well the simple stuff works. There are a lot of sites that have a list of common stains you can print out and keep with your laundry supplies

These come with a little bag to put a few of the soap nuts in. You tie the bag shut and then toss the whole thing in the wash. You can reuse the soap nuts for two or three loads. You do need to take the clothes out of the washer promptly because if you leave the bag in with wet laundry, the soap nuts will ooze a brownish stain. It isn't a permanent stain but you will have to rewash if this happens. You can toss the bag with the soap nuts in the dryer with your clothes without worrying about this because it only happens when the wet fabrics are sitting together. Still, I usually pull it out before drying because I think the heat may dry up some of the surfactant and keep the soap nuts from being as effective if you reuse them.

The thing that I enjoy the most about using soap nuts is not having to deal with huge jugs of laundry detergent. These are lightweight, take up less space, and you don't have to deal with a huge container when you're through.

I did not care for the way my clothes smelled. I was hoping the soap nuts would be perfect in every way. Try them for yourself and form your own opinion. Lots of good information come with the soap nuts from this retailer.
