Book Description

May 1, 2003
'A long-awaited book that answers many questions' Jan de Vries When antibiotics were developed in the 1940s, they were hailed as a huge breakthrough in the treatment of bacterial infections. Since then they have become the most commonly prescribed drugs in the world. However, massive over-prescribing is causing increasing problems. The advent of antibiotic-resistant organisms or 'superbugs' has more and more people demanding alternatives. Since it was published in 1996 'Alternatives to Antibiotics' has been translated into 16 languages and has been an international bestseller. 'Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics ' is a revised and updated edition of this important book. Dr John McKenna looks at the various strains of infections which have become resistant since his book was first published. He has expanded his sections on alternative, herbal, homeopathic and nutritional medicines, and shows directly that it is still possible to treat infections without antibiotics while still acknowledging the times that they may be necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fighting infection the natural way, December 10, 2003
Way back in the 1940s, the discovery of antibiotics represented a great medical breakthrough that saved many lives in the years since. Unfortunately the over-prescription and unwise use of these medicines have created resistant organisms and in this age of the superbug it is wise to become familiar with the natural alternatives that fight infection and that usually have fewer and less serious side effects.

In this updated and revised of his work, the author considers a variety of strains of infection that have developed resistance since the first edition of this book. The sections on homeopathic, nutritional and herbal remedies and cures for infection have been enlarged and brought up to date.

From this book, it is clear that it is still possible and even preferable to fight infection without the use of antibiotics. At the same time, McKenna acknowledges the value of antibiotics in many instances. This is a valuable guide to alternative ways of staying healthy, and provides a balanced look at health and the antibiotic question.

The book includes a bibliography and thorough index. Another great book that deals with this topic is Leon Chaitow's Antibiotic Crisis, Antibiotic Alternatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend it!, March 18, 1998

This book is a great guide and reference for parents who ever had any doubts about the need for antibiotics as prescribed so readily by the family doctor. Explains very clearly when they are necessary and when not.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic information for staying healthy, January 8, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For someone who may be interested in getting very basic information about why we should not use antibiotics so freely, this would be a good book; however I found it a little too basic and wish I had purchased Cindy Jones book "The Antibiotic Alternative" first. I ended up buying her book after all, and find it fits my needs for information much better. Dr. McKenna's book provides good information on the problem with bacterial resistance and the history of antibiotics as ground work, and then covers these subjects: Childhood Infections, Herbal medicine, Homeopathic medicine, Nutritional Supplementation, Bacterial supplementation (Probiotics), Healthy Diet, and Stress...all good chapters, but basically review for those who already have knowledge of these subjects. I mean, most of us do know that nutritional supplements are geared to keep us healthy, and that a healthy diet is important. If you are looking for more specific and comprehensive information for practical application with recipes on making herbal remedies that can replace the use of antibiotics if possible, I would recommend that you keep looking.
