As a pregnant woman planning an unmedicated delivery the title of this book seemed promising. I was wrong.

The title of this book makes it sound significantly less ideological than it is. Yes, unmedicated delivery is a totally attainable goal, but the entire hospital isn't working in some secret cabal against you to try an undo your plans. Books like these are really frustrating bc they pretend like all medical interventions are a setback for the advancement of women. That isn't true. Far fewer women and infants die in childbirth than 75+ years ago (when mortality rates were staggeringly high). As a nation, we've forgotten how dangerous childbirth used to be.

As far as I can tell, the woman who wrote this is not a medical provider of any sort. She's just a woman who has given birth and now has *really* strong feelings about how labor and delivery should progress. I prefer to get my advice from trained experts and without all the unfocused prose. (If this book were an outline of facts, it would be just a few pages long.)

While I still plan to deliver unmedicated (unless something goes awry in labor and prevents that from happening), I won't be sharing this book with any pregnant friends--except to make fun of how poor the writing is. "Natural delivery is like crack for your vagina!" (Really, that's a quotation). Way to keep it classy, lady.

In her honest and hilarious book, Lauren breaks down the perceived wall of pretentious natural childbirth and "what it takes" to be a crunchy mama. She takes you by the hand, levels the playing field and makes natural childbirth approachable and achievable--all while making you laugh your butt off. I've achieved two natural births in a hospital setting and can attest that this book is spot on and your best resource for understanding your choices in giving birth. A must read!!!

First of all, I was surprised to realize that the author is not a doctor, midwife, or doula-- she is just a mother of two who is interested in natural childbirth. I read forward and was put off by the extreme depiction of some common interventions, and the seemingly one-sided perspective given. I was also put off by the tone of the book and the fact that most cited sources are from common web pages, like WebMD. For me, the final straw was when she referred to her vagina as a "va-jay-jay," which I just found childish and inappropriate for an informative book on childbirth.

More importantly than all of that was the fact that this book had very few real suggestions for how to achieve a natural childbirth in a hospital setting, especially for someone who has already selected their provider and therefore delivery hospital. The only thing I really got out of the book was another vote for the importance of getting a doula, although I was disappointed to hear her depiction of how unhelpful husbands/partners are. This book also seemed to be a dumping ground for Rauseo's own distrust for OBs and the current medical system.

I didn't gain any new information from this book, and I will be recycling it rather then saving it or passing it on to someone else. I found it to be that poor and unhelpful.

This was a wonderful, well researched, and fun read. I was given this book as a gift and it was perfect for me. I want a natural childbirth but was nervous to not be in a hospital setting. Lauren's advice combines practical advice on how to achieve this goal and be your own advocate. Before reading I felt ~80% on board with natural childbirth, now I'm can honestly say I feel empowered enough to feel 100% on board. Like others mentioned, she poses and answers all your questions like she's a mind reader and her responses to them calm you down like you're talking to your best girlfriend. A must read for anyone who wants a natural birth at the hospital.

Easy and informative read. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who is considering having a natural birth in the hospital. If you have done tons of research, then it will get a little repetitive, but even so I liked reading it.

This book was SO informative, yet such a fun read! I love how well researched and written this book was. It was easy to follow and understand, and funny too! I would highly recommend this book to anyone pregnant or planning on getting pregnant... even if you don't plan on having a "natural" birth, this book can help you be informed and prepared with your birthing choices. My only complaint is that this book wasn't around when I had my first child!

A terrific, engaging read! I found the approach of one mainstream woman writing a book about her experiences to a mainstream audience particularly appealing. I also appreciate Lauren's well-researched stance and carefully footnoted references, which I will be reading for more follow-up information. The book is full of humor and personal anecdotes, which make it thoroughly relatable. This is an inspiring book that fills a real need.

l had always wanted to have a natural birth, but really didn't have the first clue of where to start. This book motivated me to get started on my birth planning and thinking about what I wanted and how I could achieve it. I'm happy to say that I had a perfect labor - very manageable with no medical interventions at all. This book put me on the right track and gave me the confidence to make it happen. Thank you!
