Editorial Reviews

Review

Like untold others, Tommy Malone has made a living playing the guitar and singing songs for the last 40 years but has never troubled the chart compilers; yet the album sleeve is still littered with photos of a man with a self-satisfied smile and; if this album is anything to judge his career by - those smiles are justified.

Malone has a well worn in voice that is perfect for these grown up songs about life, love and hope in a hopeless world.

On the well crafted chug-a-long rocker album opener; Home, Malone talks about how he feels heading back Home after five years in Tennessee, following Hurricane Katrina. Malone s sweatshop guitar playing and Jon Cleary s finest Honky-Tonk piano playing make this a great way to get the party started.

Mississippi Bootlegger could easily be a song-by-numbers, but the band find top gear early on and by the final chugging chords the sweat is virtually running down the listeners back as Malone paints beautiful pictures with words.

Things slow down and get downright funky on the title song Natural Born Days; with Malone forcing the words out over some pretty mean understated guitar playing; making it one of my favourite songs right from the off.

The mood picks up on the cautiously optimistic love song, No Reason which, again is a great song backed by five minutes of a mature band right at the very top of their game, with guitar licks, drum fills and running bass lines slithering in and out like a serpent looking for a virgin.

If I ever get to finance the filming of a James Lee Burke, Dave Robicheaux Detective novel; set in the swamps of Louisiana the bar band in the opening shot will be Tommy Malone and friends rocking the joint with Life Goes On; or perhaps it could be during the final credits; but the point is they go together like biscuits and gravy.

The album finishes with a slow and insightful Word on the Street; which is probably for the best as my pulse was racing far too fast for a man of my age.

Wow! I love discovering new diamonds like Tommy Malone. --No Depression/Alan Harrison

The kind of record that'll have long legs because it has so much heart. This voice can certainly be a beacon in your wilderness. --Midwest Record

Product Description

M.C. Records is proud to announce that the lead voice and guitarist of the Subdudes, Tommy Malone will release his first solo recording in 12 years on June 18, 2013. Natural Born Days features Tommy's outstanding songwriting, inviting vocals and amazing guitar playing.

The sessions for the new album were recorded in New Orleans and produced and mixed by 10 Time Grammy Award winner John Porter (Buddy Guy, Keb Mo, B.B. King, R.L. Burnside, Ryan Adams). On the new recording Tommy Malone works with some of New Orleans finest ; Keys - Jon Cleary, Drums - Doug Belote, Bass - David Hyde, Guitar - Shane Theriot, Background vocals -Susan Cowsill.

Tommy Malone has had a musical love affair with fans for over 30 years. As the 'heart and center' front man of the legendary Americana act The Subdudes, he has carved his way as a gifted singer, player and songwriter with a distinctive musical voice.

In Tommy s solo band, as lead guitarist and singer, he punctuates soulful, heart-felt vocals with playing that is at turns joyful, incendiary and melancholic.

A musician s musician, he has recorded with Rosanne Cash, Shawn Colvin and Anders Osborne, and has impacted markets with hit other projects including Tiny Town and the Continental Drifters.

Tommy's songs have been recorded by Joe Cocker, The Radiators, Tab Benoit and many others, but it s his ability to perform his own stories and turn them into vivid musical images that sets him apart from other performers.

It's a joy to review this well composed, executed and produced CD release titled 'Natural Born Days' by the talented blues guitarist singer-songwriter Tommy Malone. What can I say?: (1) the CD has great compositions. It's no wonder Tommy Malone has written songs for many other 'major' artists including legend Joe Cocker, The Radiators (his brother Dave Malone is a guitarist in this band) and blues maestro Tab Benoit among others (Tommy Malone is a band leader of Americana/roots rock band The Subdudes). (2) His guitar work is simple but yet very effective and beautiful; (3) his vocal range is enticing. Tommy Malone has been in the music industry for more than 40 years and this is his first solo recording in 12 years. His debut solo album is 'Soul Heavy', which he released in 2001. After listening attentively to this CD twice I was pleasantly surprised how great it is and I have ask mysellf why I haven't heard him before? I'll certainly be listening to his back catalogue to see what I have missed over the years from him and his band.

Stand-outs/gems/my favourites are the tracks "God Knows" (great guitar work, wonderful vocal range & a beautiful melody), "Wake Up Time" (great keyboard playing, melody & vocals), the title track "Natural Born Days" (wonderful harmonies, keyboard playing & melody : Glory be halleluja) & the sweet closing track "Word On The Street" (a slow-tempo jazzy track with great guitar work, melody & vocals).

Good tracks include the opening track "Home", "Hope Diner" (up-tempo rachety number), the ballad & popish "Distance", "Didn't Want To Hear It" (anothe ballad), "No Reason" & the countryish track "Important To Me". Okay tracks are "Mississippi Bootleggers" & "Life Goes On" (very good harmonies).

I grew up near New Orleans in the '50's-'60's and New Orleans radio turned me away from other types of music--had me hooked, couldn't get enough, even in grade school. Then thru the years as other music caught my ear it was always with the feeling that all music sprung from N.O. Lately I have been revisiting that music and catching up with the local sound and have to say I have missed much. If not for "Treme" on HBO I still might be missing some good stuff, but luckily I came across this album and I am so impressed I don't know what to say. I won't go into detail, but give this a listen-- you will not be disappointed.

Tommy Malone is probably one of the most soulful singer-songwriters in America and has become the voice of New Orleans for me, I'm glad he's Home

Glad I found this great mix. Was missing this voice. Demonstrates this artists capabilities. Again, the only thing better, would be to be able hear this performed live.
