This product eliminated my algae problem. I've owned a plaster pool for six years, and have at best only been able to keep the algae at bay, both green and red (red algae, not pink slime). I tried every chemical recommended by several pool stores, including super-chlorination and bromine. I was adding chlorine every two days and kept two floaters in at all times just to keep it at 1ppm; it got expensive. So when the pool store recommended this product because my phosphates were too high, I thought, "Sure... another expensive chemical to sell me." But I was desperate, so tried it anyway. My initial level was 1000ppb, which means that while I was trying to kill the algae with chlorine, the phosphates were feeding it. After two treatments (read the directions carefully) of 1.5 liters each, running the pump for 24 hours straight after each treatment, it was down to 300ppb (recommended level is <200). I added a third treatment for good measure. I haven't seen algae in three months. I add chlorine no more than once/week in the summer, and it easily stays at 3ppm. This is going to save me work, headaches, and $$$ on chlorine. It has nearly eliminated the calcium buildup on the tile at the waterline since I'm not shocking constantly.

WARNING: do not apply this until you have killed the algae in your pool. Yes, it removes the phosphates (algae food), but it somehow protects the existing algae, making it very hard to kill. Shock well, then use Phosfree the next day.

Update: I found silver algacide helps get rid of the red bacteria.

Never got it that cheap before, don't expect to again.

Anything under $25.00 for a 3-liter bottle is a great price.

This is a superior product and my wife and I have had great results and no regrets or problems using it. Our best success with this product has been when we've followed these directions, as I recommend you do:

Directions:

1. If pool has algae, follow dealer instructions to treat.

2. Follow dealer instructions to balance water chemically.

3. Clean or backwash filter, if necessary.

4. Refer to PHOSfree product back chart for dosage.

5. With filter running, shake bottle well, and add required dose directly to skimmer.

6. Run filter 8 hours a day for one week or 48 hours continuously without backwashing or cleaning.

When phosphates levels are 100ppb or less, begin Pool perfect+ Phosfree as a weekly maintenance.

If you are having any kind of recurrent problem with algae, you owe it to yourself to try this. Here's my story. We bought a house in August of last year (southern Ohio), which had an inground pool. I've never owned or had a pool in my entire life, so needless to say, I didn't know the first thing about pool care. We got by OK last year, just using shock, algae killer, lots of brushing, and clarifier. The pool was in pretty good shape when we closed it, and when we opened it in May this year, the water looked good. I took a sample to the local pool store, and surprisingly, the only thing they recommended was adding PhosFree. I'd never heard of it, but I bought some and poured it into the skimmer. First half of the summer was great, never had any algae problems.

Around mid-July, the algae started coming back. I sometimes would get a little lazy adding shock, maybe waiting up to two weeks to add it, or adding only two bags when I should be adding three (30,000 gal pool). So I started getting more serious, adding the right amount of shock, and using algaecide when needed. But the algae just kept coming back in a day or two. We went away for three days in early August, and the pool was a LOVELY emerald green when we returned. More algaecide, more shock, more clarifier, but the best we could get was a cloudy, light aqua green water. I easily spent over 100.00 between August and September just attacking the algae. Then I remembered the PhosFree I had used in the spring. I checked Amazon, which was selling it at 19.99. The local pool store wanted 60% more, so I ordered a 3-liter bottle from Amazon (actually In the Swim). The bottle arrived with a small phosphate testing kit, which indicated that my phosphate levels were > 1000 (very high). According to the directions on the bottle, I needed to add 1.5 liters per 10000 gallons (less if your phosphate levels are lower), so I should have ordered more. But I figured one bottle was better than nothing, so I just added the one, 3-liter bottle.

I re-tested after 24 hours, and was disappointed that the phosphate level hadn't dropped significantly. So I hurried up and ordered 3 more bottles (to qualify for free shipping). But when I tested the next day (48 hours total), the phosphate levels had dropped drastically, to between 100 - 300. I'll add some more, to get it down to under 100, and then keep up with the maintenance dose of one capful per 8000 gal weekly. I'll update the review in a few weeks, to let you know if the algae is still gone. But so far, so good!

Using this product now for the past two months has left us free of algae.

This is a significant savings over the various algecides which are quite expensive.

Just be sure to keep your chlorine levels correctly.

I bought this after I read the reviews and a recommendation from a family member. This stuff works! Hottest summer ever and the water was crystal clear all summer long. Not a hint of algae. I recommend to everyone...

I've used the product for 5 years and have not seen algae since. If your using chlorine, this product will allow you to fully enjoy your pool again.

Pool opening can be expensive and even irritating. Phos-Free is a product that takes the hassle out of keeping up a pool. All you have to do at the start of the season is have your water checked, get the chlorine level up and then use Phos-free once a week. The product is expensive, but when you subtract umpteen trips to the pool store for water evaluations, X# of chemicals to up this and lower that - the price of Phos-free is a bargain. At Amazon.com we've been able to get the product at an even better price than at the pool store. We use nothing else. We have recommended this product to all our friends who have chlorine pools as well.

Good stuff @ a Great Price. Two 3 liter bottles brought my phosphate levels down from +1500 to less then 100 in a 15,000 gal pool. I used the 6 liters over a 4 week time frame.

We had a pretty bad algae bloom and our pool guy recommended this product. We cleaned the filters, put in an entire 3 liter bottle of phos free, a few gallons of liquid chlorine, and our pool was clear in 24 hours. I will continue to use phos free to keep the algae away.
