A Natural Alternative,
This review is from: Natural Choice environmentally-sensitive Diapers, X-Large Size 5, Over 27 Pounds (156-Count Diapers) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
My wife and I have two children. Through our own experimentation and by talking with others, we've found that it's not necessary to buy the most expensive diaper for your child. In fact, with our daughter, White Cloud worked excellent. We had very few problems with those diapers. Our eight-month old son has a shape that works best with Huggies. I was anxious to try out these Natural Choice diapers to see how they'd work with him.
The shape of these diapers fit my son very well. They are longer and more narrow than most average diapers and have a slimmer build to them, which allows my son a lot more freedom with his little legs. The tabs aren't as forgiving as those on Huggies or some other brands, but they do fit my son well. As far as the wet stuff is concerned, Natural Choice holds up just fine. We've experienced only one leak so far and that was during the night, when his diaper isn't changed as often. The poop factor hasn't let us down at all. Although my son hasn't had any major explosions in these diapers, he has been known for some fairly large loads (if you know what I mean). It's all been held in place so far. Of course, most people who purchase these diapers will do so with the whole environmentally friendly tag in mind. Like many other reviewers have stated, I'm always very leary of products that make the eco-friendly proclamation due to the fact that this usually equals low quality. Natural Choice is a nice exception to the rule. The quality of these diapers was much more than expected. The claims of Natural Choice are that they are made with chlorine-free pulp, and bio-based absorbent materials that "reduce use of petroleum based gels." Whether or not these diapers have that much of an impact on the environment, I cannot deny their quality. I will buy more of these diapers in the future and recommend them to parents with little ones in the home.

I wanted this product to work. The idea of an environmentaly friendly diaper appeals to us all.
Unfortunately this diaper does not match up to the big name competitors. The diaper conscruction is adequate. They fit very nicely. I was actually very happy with how they fit on my 5 month old son's long frame. They also fasten snugly with the repositionable fasteners. They are not quite as soft as the big brands, both inside and out. As far as absorbancy, they are poorly lacking. For daily changes they do well, as long as you check frequently for the need to change. My problem is that my son sleeps through the night, and after a full nights sleep, his clothes and the bed sheets were totally soaked. Something that has never happened with the other brands. I cannot recommend this product because of this. Perhaps for smaler babies, or babies that do not sleep through the night these might be ok. I don't want to have to worry about leaks, and with these diapers that will always be on your mind.

Choose another brand!,

We usually buy either Seventh Generation or Tushies brand but bought these when we were at a grocery store that didn't carry either brand. THESE ARE HORRIBLE. They leak all the time. There were constant blow outs.
My daughter has very sensitive skin and I thought that these would be good since they were chlorine free. But everytime she wore them they gave her a rash. Overall, I would choose a different brand of diapers.

Just OK... mostly bad,

We bought these because my conscience has been getting the better of me since reading that even though only 5% of the population uses disposable diapers, it is still the 3rd leading contributer to landfills. I wanted to be "environmentally sensitive" to that fact, but these diapers just suck. They are thin and papery, and they leak bad. But my biggest gripe with these is that they don't stay on. My daughter was about 10 months old when we started trying these and even with her pants on over them, they would come off while she was wearing them. Hello? It was torture trying to use them all up, I couldn't wait to get back to Huggies and start looking for another 'sposie alternative (We are now checking into Gdiapers). BOTTOM LINE: I REALLY wanted these to work, but they simply don't. Save yourself the trouble... keep looking.

I found these diapers at a military commissary and ever since then have been ordering them from Amazon. Pampers are so thin and leaked through, and if they didn't, my baby had a very wet bottom. Huggies are even worse. Now that Natural choice has redesigned their diapers with better elastic/closures, their diapers are even better. They have extra absorption in the front which is great for boys. My baby is so much more dry and comfortable. The only time I had a leak was when my nanny didn't put the closures on tight enough and the diaper was loose. Considering how often I had to change pampers and huggies, these actually end up being more cost effective. Also Natural Choice diapers are softer than 7th Generation diapers.

almost all of my reviews have been of books. these diapers, however, merited review. they compare with other major brands, being a couple cents per diaper more than others. they certainly fit better and offered both more security and the snaps seemed more comfortable. i drive my trash to the dump and i'm shocked at how much trash 4 of us generate each week. any time that i can reduce the amount of trash or any time that a diaper can be more biodegradable, i'm for it. this is an excellent choice that i'd fully recommend.

A Happy Medium,

This is our 1st child and so we are new to the whole diaper debate. We chose disposables because our work/laundry schedule could not support the cloth diaper lifestyle. With that in mind, we had to think of affordability along with the "green" factor.
As it turns out, our child has sensitive skin. We've tried huggies pure & natural, pampers sensitive, Earth's best and 7th generation. When you stop using the big brands and have to go back to them (mistimed the shipping on these) - she really shows the difference. She has a rash within hours. 7th gen is the least irritating, but very stiff and don't fit her well. As mentioned before, these diapers are slimmer and a little longer - good for our long, thin baby. At almost 5 months now, she makes it comfortably through the night without a change and without leaks. She's also left some major "deposits" and no blow-outs. I only have 2 criticisms: 1, the tabs are strong enough, but not as strong as other brands. And 2, I wish the subscription were not individual packages bundled in a case - I wish it were just a case of loose diapers so there wouldn't be so much plastic to throw away - we are trying to be "green" after all....

I would actually give this product 3.5 stars, if that were possible. Here's the thing: if you look at the price per unit (diaper), you cannot really compare these diapers to the premium brands, since they are FAR cheaper. They do have sort of a "crunchy" feel, similar to 7th Gen. However, even at the substantial cost savings, I found these to perform much better than 7th Gen or Earth's Best. They are not as good as Huggies Pure n Natural, but then, for the price, I ought to be comparing these to the store brand diapers I once purchased in an emergency.
We have had two leaks thus far (pee only), but this is not any more frequent than with the other brands mentioned prior. This has only been with the overnight diaper, since my son sleeps for 10 hours at night. They hold in #2 well and we have not had any issues with that. Zero complaints as a daytime diaper. Regarding the waist tabs and stretch that some reviewers have commented on: the stretch is ample and sufficient, and the tab construction is adequate. I am not sure how many times some of these people are trying to refasten the diaper, but come on, let's be serious-- you get the diaper on, and unless you hear or smell something going on beforehand, you check it 1.5-2 hrs. later and it's been soiled (#1) and it's time for a new diaper. Long story short: the tabs are totally secure and fine. They seem to have plenty of stretch to accomodate a baby that is within the weight range listed for the size. They are sized a little "longer," but I still think the sizing is in line with the other brand manufacturers. My son is 5.5 months, nearly 18 lbs., and the size 3 is perfect. Like any diaper, if you are in-between sizes, I recommend going up to the larger size. I do question how well these will work once my son starts crawling (he's nearly there), since they do not seem very flexible and are pretty wide-cut through the crotch. For the time being, this is a moot concern and these diapers serve the purpose intended. Unfortunately, there is no way to "test" these diapers before investing in a large lot of them, since it seems they are not available in most retail locations (nowhere near me anyhow), but I bit the bullet and bought the pack and given the cost, I am not sorry. I prefer to buy Huggies Pure n Natural with coupons, but it's not always feasible to be running to the store either (both working parents), so I appreciate the convenience of Amazon's home delivery. For everyone's enjoyment and informative purposes, I will upload two pics of my son in these diapers.

I'm a long way from being an expert on diapers, but I thought I could offer a helpful opinion anyway (and learn something in the process).
I arranged "field tests" with two different children (both boys), and the results were very positive. In both cases, the diapers came out clearly ahead of "regular" brands on absorbency, fit, comfort, quality of construction, durability, lack of irritation, and superiority of absorptive material. They controlled fluid situations well, including a bout of watery diarrhea, lasting through an entire night easily. There was no problem with the gel material leaking or popping out of the diaper when saturated, which avoids that major cleanup issue. The only complaint was that the waistbands were slightly less stretchy than a regular brand. This could be due to less use of latex or similar material, which would be a positive if the child were latex intolerant. This brand also seemed to be a bit larger than other brands of the same size. I did my own absorbency test with water and found that they would hold a full cup easily without leaking. I also tested the velcro-like tabs for strength of hold and number of times they can be opened and re-attached. I found that the fasteners could be opened and re-closed at least 12 times without impacting their hold (some people prefer checking the diaper that way). The lack of strong perfumes, chlorine, etc., is a very strong point in their favor. The fact that they are more environmentally sound is also a plus. Price is comparable to regular brands. Most of the information on the package is a little vague when it comes to details about the actual construction and materials. I checked for a web page but did not find one, nor is one mentioned on the package, although there is a customer service phone number (which I didn't try). Also not mentioned is any detail about the exact nature of the special "bio-based" (a fairly meaningless phrase) absorbing material. I would like to have more details about the exact nature of the materials involved, but even with that, I still feel that they are better than regular brands of disposables. The maker is not as open and clear about these diapers as Seventh Generation is about their similar version, and I think they need to work on that. Leaving questions in the customer's mind is not good marketing. There are environmental issues with disposables, but this manufacturer is clearly trying to move in the right direction. If you are going to use disposable diapers, it is better to use something like this, both for environmental and health reasons. I am comfortable recommending these.

I was pleasantly surprised when I started using these diapers with my daughter (22 months), because I have tried a few "eco-friendly" diaper brands and the results have been somewhat disappointing for some popular brands, especially when it came to leaking.
With these diapers we had no problems with leaking, even after an entire night - and in the morning my daughter's skin wasn't irritated (as it normally is after wearing the same diaper for the whole night), instead she was dry and didn't need any diaper ointment to soothe irritation. So the absorbant material is obviously good, and the diaper must be somewhat breathable. The price is pretty much the same as that of Seventh Generation diapers, and this product seems to have been made to compete with the one by Seventh Generation, so I'll make a few comparisons: - Cost: as said above, very similar. - "Performance": I found Seventh Generation Diapers to leak fairly often, while I didn't have this problem with Natural Choice. - Fit: Seventh Generation seems more comfortable because of shape and stretchy sides, while Natural choice runs a tad small and doesn't seem as well- designed when it comes to shape. - Comfortability of material: Seventh Generation diapers are softer than Natural Choice, which seem slightly stiff. Breathability seems good in both brands, with perhaps a slight advantage for Natural Choice. - Eco-friendly aspect: I'm going to side with Seventh Generation for this one. Their products have been tested and their claims confirmed, and Seventh generation are definitely the most eco-friendly diaposable diapers available on the market. Natural Choice sounds similar, but on closer inspecion, a few things pop up, the first being that they state "chlorine-free pulp", which in market lingo means that the rest of the thediaper likely comes from chlorinated materials (and that's fairly obvious when you see that they are white); the other being that they state they use "less" synthetic gel material in the absorbent core - they don't state how much less, or even say that they only use a minimum of it. So while I'm fairly happy with how these these diapers absorb and hold, I'm suspicious at to whether this is one of those products that was created to cash in on the currently trendy "going green" as opposed to actually making an eco-friendly product to decrease our negative impact on the environment. That alone for me was worth one additional star, if not more. |
