I started using this for our 2 year old Rottweiler that has a rare inflammatory disease that makes her very allergic to many foods. Venison is the only meat she can take well. This food worked so well for so long and then I noticed a change in her and her tummy issues. She didn't want to eat the food anymore and I couldn't understand why. I looked at the ingredients one day and noticed all of a sudden there was a new ingredient of CHICKEN FAT!! I have no idea why they would start adding something that most dogs are allergic to into a dog food that people buy to help with allergies! Please Nutro, understand that most people use this food for their dogs that are allergic to traditional sources of protein, ie~chicken!! I unfourtunately have to switch to something else...

I've had a lot of dogs over my lifetime. For the first time though, my lab has a number of food allergies. She had a really bad ear infection that was so bad she needed surgery twice. The vet recommended a Science Diet dog food that was just way out of my price range. Besides, I've heard that Science Diet really isn't always best, as they want you to believe. In fact, vets get a percentage of the payments you make if you buy that food.

I'm a human nurse and it reminds me of Tylenol. Their tag line used to be "what hospitals use most". Yeah, that's because they sold it to the hospitals for cheap, so of course they'd use it! Just keep that in mind.

Going back further, my vet in Alaska was the one who told me to try Natural Choice when it first came out. That was before the allergy thing. The vet said that this food was more digestible and so left less waste. Also, it didn't smell nearly as bad. I switched and that's been about 15 years ago now, I think. I had two dogs back then (one small and one really big) that have since passed away, and I now have a (nearly) 5-year-old lab/GSD mix (all of mine are rescues/adopted). I recommended it to all my friends and most switched over and those that did, loved it to.

My girl now though developed an ear infection in 2011. The vet we have now (in Alabama) believed it was food allergy related. So! We switched to this particular food, the venison and potato. Knock on wood, she hasn't had another ear infection again, which is good news because the cost for her two surgeries plus treatment was at such a great expense that I do not wish to repeat it. On the other hand, it (naturally) doesn't deter her environmental allergies. In fact, right now she has a hot spot from summer environmental allergies. Poor thing.

My dog is allergic to chicken so I was looking for a dog food without chicken. This seemed to fit the bill, until I got to read the ingredients. Chicken fat was the 4th one!!!! That is where the most allergens are found. It must clearly say that chicken is used because there are lots of dogs that are very allergic to chicken.

Imagine my surprise when I purchase a bag of Nutro® Natural Choice® Grain-Free Venison & Potato Dog Food all because it has no grain and a novel protein, and I get it home, feed it to my dog and then read the entire list of ingredients, and I find chicken fat. If the consumer is buying a dog food with a novel protein, there is a reason and that reason is usually a sensitivity or allergy to chicken or beef. Nutro needs to put a large disclaimer on the bag that says it contains chicken. The descriptions from Amazon's website that says "Pasture fed new zealand venison is the single novel animal protein source to further minimize digestive issues," from Nutro's website that says "New Zealand venison meal is a unique, high-quality source of protein that's not often used in dog food, which makes it less likely to aggravate food sensitivities," and the one from Petsmart's website "New Zealand Venison is the single novel animal protein source and potatoes are the single carbohydrate source to reduce the likelihood of food sensitivity" are extremely misleading. Now I've spent $18.99 plus tax for a food that I'll have to throw away as my dog can not eat chicken. I guess I should have read the whole list of ingredients before I purchased. Lesson learned.

UPDATE 1/20/14: I received this response from Nutro addressing my concerns about this food: "Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We value the opinions of our consumers and take their feedback very seriously. The chicken fat used in our products is purified by centrifugation and stabilized by natural antioxidants. Dogs/cats that have chicken sensitivities will generally not have issues with this since the protein and carbohydrates have been removed. This ingredient is used primarily as a palatant.
