Book Description

P. I. Fran Kirk Mystery May 2003
What should have been a romantic morning-after turns sour when P.I. Fran Kirk gets two calls about the same dead body. Called out to a natural foods farm in Wyoming County, east of Buffalo, Fran's job is to discover whether the apparent accidental death of a farmhand is really accidental. Fran works for the insurance company carrying Hickory Hills insurance, and they don't want to pay up if they don't have to.

Before she can sign off on the case, Fran discovers that the granddaughter of the farm's founders is missing, and Fran is asked to find her. But someone doesn't want her sticking her nose into the affairs of the farm.

A fire, vandalism and another death, not to mention shots in the dark that come much too close, drive Fran deeper into the entanglements of the farm family. On the trail of the missing teenager, Fran heads for Pennsylvania Dutch country, where danger still pursues her and she runs for her life in alien territory. The only thing non-toxic about this case is the organic food that abounds in every kitchen.

When Fran finally confronts the murderer, she loses the upper hand and she can almost see the grim reaper. Second in the P. I. Fran Kirk mystery series.

Editorial Reviews

Review

4 Stars!...an engaging mystery with a rather unique setting...the characters are all very three-dimensional... -- Deborah Hern, The Romance Readers' Connection

All the detective's wiles are called on in a tricky murder case. This is a terrific page-turner of a read. -- Warren Murphy, two-time Edgar winner and co-author of The Forever King

Furie delivers a good, fast-paced read. Fran Tremaine Kirk is gutsy and real enough to touch. -- Camilla T. Crespi, author of the Simona Griffo mystery series

In Fran Kirk, a newly licensed PI, Ruthe Furie has created a complex character for the 90s! -- Margaret Maron, award-winning author of the Deborah Knott mystery series

This is a well-crafted plot, full of atmosphere and exhilarating adventures...a pleasure to read. -- Barbara Buhrer, Reviewing the Evidence

3.0 out of 5 stars Buffalo investigator involved in death at an organic farm, November 4, 2001

This review is from: A Natural Death (Paperback)
Fran Kirk is sent to investigate a death (by pitchfork) in the barn of an organic farm. Things quickly become complicated. The victim has been rolling in the hay with many of the women at the farm. The owner's granddaughter is missing. Computer files quickly reveal double books. And then someone starts attacking Fran as she investigates....

All told, I found this a mediocre read - despite it's have garnished a nomination for a Shamus Best Paperback. The sense of place was so vague that I had to keep reminding myself where the book was set (rural New York and Pennsylvania). There were so many characters that none of them had much depth. And, well, I guess Fran Kirk with her history of spousal abuse simply wasn't a protagonist that I warmed up to very well.
