Book Description

21st-Century Gardening Series September 1, 2000
Home gardeners can diagnose plant diseases correctly and treat them effectively using the least toxic methods available with the information provided in this comprehensive book. The ecologically minded gardener will understand the complex nature of plant pathogens and learn to identify symptoms of diseases and disorders. Information about the most common and devastating plant diseases that afflict trees, turf grasses, vegetables, and ornamental plants is given. Although a preventive approach is stressed, should diseases get a foothold, this book contains a thorough discussion of the range of the least toxic disease controls. Many of the remedies can be mixed from readily available ingredients and, when used responsibly, will protect the gardener and the environment.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Written by various regional plant pathology experts, this companion volume to Natural Insect Control addresses numerous diseases that affect plants in all areas of the country. Not surprisingly, all the authors deem prevention the best cure, and they outline preemptive methods for ornamental plants, vegetables, turf grass and trees. The section on Nine Keys to Disease Prevention offers gardeners advice beyond the simplistic, familiar tips by discussing how plants react to diseases and the stages at which plants are most vulnerable to problems. The experts discuss disease identification and the difference between bacteria, viruses, fungi and nematodes. Problems caused by such environmental problems as pollution, faulty moisture (excessive or inadequate), chemicals and nutrients' availability in soils also merit attention. In addition to narrative chapters, the book contains a lengthy section of charts detailing specific problems, their prevention, and numerous natural controls such as Neem oil and creative uses of vinegar, baking soda and compost tea when prevention alone is insufficient to deter insects disease. Illustrations of diseased plants, a list of suppliers, organized by region, for disease-resistant plants and for biological control substances, as well as an informative reference source for additional information, increase the value of this practical book. 1.0 out of 5 stars not quite what I ordered, November 10, 2008
The book I received was marred by labels and markings which said it was discontinued and removed from a library. Had I known, I would not have purchased it. The seller should have noted its condition in the description..

I expressed my disappointment to the seller but have not received a response.
