Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

There is a great deal of natural health information on this disc, arranged under Health Topics, Herbal Topics, Vitamins, Minerals, Proteins and Amino Acids, Miscellaneous Supplements, Articles of Interest, Chemical Properties, and a Bibliography. There is also an Index, Search, a search History feature, and a Glossary. Sound a lot like a book? It acts much like one, too, except for the hot-linking that goes on among entries and to the glossary terms (it's hard to discern the difference, as the glossary links are the same color text as the entry links, only with dotted underlinings). What's good here? As previously noted, there's quite a bit of information, e.g., the entry for catnip has a color photo of the plant, lists the parts used for healthcare, the common name, nutritional contents, chemical constituents, principal users, dosages, benefits, and functions. Many entries also include warnings about use. The bibliography is based on older works plus a number of newer titles (published into 1997). What's not so good? There are some inconsistencies, e.g., St. John's wort (in any spelling) was not findable in the index, yet it is listed in the Herbal Topics and was easily located in a number of entries under the Search feature. Ditto for mushrooms. Why? Bottom Line: Recommended for public libraries, keeping in mind the publisher's caution that this disc "should in no way be considered a substitute for treatment by a qualified physician."

I was surprised at the compact way the information was presented. I didn't have to read chapter after chapter to find what I was looking for. This is great and I refer to it often.
