4.0 out of 5 stars Great Soul Music
Bloodstone is such an underrated group. Tremendous harmonies. The lead vocals features a falsetto rivaling that of Philip Bailey. "Never Let You Go" is one of the more soul stirring songs I have ever heard. The remastered sound is OK.

2.0 out of 5 stars natural high
very disappointing when compared to "go on and cry". song selection is very poor. "natural high" is really the only worthwhile song on the cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars a groovy twist on the '70s R&B group sound !, October 4, 2009
This review is from: Natural High (Audio CD)
First: Quick warning - - This is a GREAT album by the GREATEST of all unsung '70s R&B heroes, but they actually have a better album. - - It doesn't contain "Natural High", their big hit - - but the overall production is a bit tighter, the selections are slightly less mainstream and a bit more funky - -
to that extent I'd recommend getting Unreal instead.

This said - - NATURAL HIGH is still an unbelievably groovy taste of '70s R&B and soul...
A key trademark of the band was their ability to play mellow, yet put a bit of funk in it too...
and how even though BLOODSTONE were in the tradition of the great R&B vocal groups at the time, they also played their own instruments and wrote their own songs, giving them a distinct and original sound few of their compatriots had.

As for my favorite tune: The UNDISPUTED TRUTH'ish, "Tell It To My Face" and the bouncy soul number "Never Let You Go" (some really great falsetto style shouting backed by some wonderful vocal harmonies)... also the TEMPATIONS-ish GIRL (You Look So Fine) - - (If you like that one out, check out Free Your Mind: The 700 West Sessions - - great driving bass!) Frankly speaking, I don't quite get the popularity of the tune they're best known for "Natural High" - - a great tune... but who knows, maybe one day it will grow on me.

The album also includes 5 bonus tracks from their self titled album BLOODSTONE... a few lean in the direction of funky psychedelic soul - - but one interesting track is a version of one of the coolest yet corniest pop tunes of the '70s: LITTLE GREEN APPLES... as is the case with most BLOODSTONE tunes, their rhythm section is capable of laying on a back-beat that gives the tune a wicked dance beat, yet at the same time keeps it mellow.

If you like this album, check out The Joneses which I also recently reviewed.

This album is what they mean when ya hear the term old-school. This Album was the bomb when it was released. one half of the songs are beautiful with my favorites being natural high, spinning around, and dont turn around. If you want to hear old school, listen to this group. Interesting history too, look it up!

Natural High, this was a popular song when I was a young adolescent. I sing in a group and in searching for a song to introduce, I recalled this song which I still remembered after about 40 years. None the less, the sound and feelings the song generates are no different. Unfortunately only a couple other songs on the CD were worth working with or listening too. I found them very dated and out of sync with the song "Natural High".

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw, but darn good., March 5, 2000

This group caught my eye when I saw them in a movie Trainride To Hollywood circa 1980. Have no idea why neither the soundtrack nor the film is currently available to buy. It was a fun musical film with great music, and I got the soundtrack back then and enjoyed it.

I also got Natural High, and still have a CD of it. It is raw early 70's R+B with warts and all. My own personal opinion is that Never Let You Go is the best track, and one of my favorite tunes. Very upbeat, with good funky rhythms on the Fender Rhodes. It is preceeded in what I always thought was a very interesting way by Ran It In The Ground.

The song Natural High was covered, I think, by the Commodores. Tarrentino used the Bloodstone version in one of his films, Jackie Brown I think it was. The CD cover discusses the emotions the group had in recording the song.

To be honest, there are only one or two songs off this CD that I really go for when I put it on. That could lead to a three-star rating, but I guess I'll give it four.

It would be nice if the soundtrack and the movie of Trainride to Hollywood could somehow be released again. It wasn't the best film I ever saw or anything, but it was fun and I don't see why it's not available to listen to. They covered a lot of different genres in it, like covering "As Time Goes By" and "Yackety-Yack". Maybe Tarrentino could make it happen. Maybe amazon.com could look into it.
