Book Description

Andreas Nikandros has one focus, to kill the vampire he believes murdered his sister, and he knows with their greater strength, the surest way to kill a vampire is to become one. As a zoologist, he's used to looking at the world from a natural standpoint, but when he sets out on a quest to find a vampire to Turn him, what he finds in Titus Antonius Calidus is the last thing he expected. Titus has lived for over a thousand years, and in all that time has only ever given his heart to one man. As they follow their natural instincts, they discover something truly worth living forever for, each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars You must buy it April 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
You know you are reading an engrossing book when you don't realize that your backyard is flooding until your neighbor bangs on your door to inform you of the rising water! And then you get annoyed because that disaster means you have to stop reading the book. So to say I really liked S.J. Frost's "Natural Instincts" is a vast understatement. I thoroughly enjoyed every single page in this gripping, sexy and complex tale of vampires in Chicago.

Titus and Andreas are three-dimensional characters who are equals on every level, and even though Titus is a vampire, his human lover matches him quite easily in wit, intelligence and strength. It is apparent to see why Titus would fall so hard, so quick for Andreas. It was their relationship that dragged me into Natural Instincts and kept me spellbound for 252 pages. The chemistry between them literally jumps off the page, and the love scenes are scorching.

Plus there are amazingly complex secondary characters who provide a wonderful backdrop to the plot and S.J. Frost is able to effortlessly weave their storylines into the main plot, without it taking away from Titus and Andreas. And although I loved Titus and Andreas' story, I certainly hope S.J. Frost will be revisiting this universe because I really want Daniel to have his happy ending too.

So, if you love vampires, great writing, brilliant characterizations and an intricate plot, then "Natural Instincts" is the read for you. Highly recommended. 5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Severely disappointed August 17, 2011
By Catrini
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
From the other reviews I really expected a lot more from this book, but before I even got to the halfway point I was already having to force myself to continue reading. I eventually gave up, it was just too painful.

There is little to no character development in the story, every character came across as one-dimensional and I never cared what happened to them. The author also fell into the trap of "telling" the story instead of "showing" it. Beyond the first chapter this story has really nothing to do with a dead sister, of which I found it impossible to believe the main character felt any grief over her murder (this is due to the author telling us he feels grief but his actions don't bear that out). I almost felt as if the author started writing a revenge story, then switched to straight romance, then decided to throw in an ex-lover to create some conflict. I only read as long as I did to see if the author ever got back to the revenge story.

Mild spoiler

I try not to rate a story on whether I like the world the author has created but if the vampires within the story had been a little more "vampiry" I could have given it an extra star. These weren't vampires though, they were immortal humans who drank blood.

3.0 out of 5 stars mediocre March 12, 2012

Not being able to award two and a half stars I went for the better rating but indeed this novel has only got half of what it takes to be really good. That was unexpected, having seen all those raving reviews.

Ms Frost has a good sense of storytelling, a nice rhythm, she builds a plot that flows with no effort and readers will find themselves at the end of the book in no time.
Unfortunately characters are one dimentional, feelings and psychologies develop in leaps if at all and the story itself is much more told than shown. I took no real satisfaction in the happy ending.

Writing is in order but nothing more, grammar could have been better.

Sex is explicit and the vampire lover an alpha male...many will probably apreciate that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! October 21, 2013

Andreas knows that vampires exists and decides he wants to become on in order to get revenge against the vampire that killed his sister. When he meets with him he gets thrown out of the club only to be saved by another vampire Titus who is older and wiser. Andreas makes a deal with Titus to learn all about vampires from him for one month and if he still wants to be a vampire then Titus will make him one. Andreas agrees but what he doesn't count on is falling in love with Titus and having him change his mind about revenge.

I loved this story. S.J. Frost is a great story teller and once again I fell in love with her characters and their love. I love how Titus is the gruff older vampire that has been lonely for many years only to be surprised by the human who can ignite love in him again. I also love Andreas's patience with Titus and how they complement each other in every way. I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

I give this story 5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Natural Instincts, S. J. Frost April 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The blurbs for all the books in this series are very accurate and since I read them I'm only doing this once because they're equally good. I loved the writing and the stories. It's a very good take on vampires and just different enough to make them very interesting, There are no cliffhangers which is definitely a plus for me. The sex doesn't overwhelm the story and that's another plus.

Good, solid, likeable characters, plot a bit too predictable, unlikely, and boring. It may be my dislike for the "damsel in distress" trope, which Andreas represented more than once.

Other than that I did enjoy this vampire/mm romance offering with very hot sex scenes. I think I'll try the next in the series, just to see if Andreas grows a backbone and Daniel finally falls for K.
