I love that the designs are simple, but have little details that make them special like a picot edge or a simple cable. I have already made the hat and booties and loved them. Yarn is easily substituted. My only negative comment is that the patterns indicate to knit everything flat and then seam, including the hat and stuffed animals. Some things are better done in the round, but it is easily remedied by someone with a little knowledge of knitting in the round. I would think this would be an awesome book for a beginner.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I have made almost all of the patterns in this book, and I can't say that for most knitting books I own. The patterns have good pictures, clear instructions, and I have yet to find a mistake in the patterns. The designs are simple and classic, yet unique. And a bonus... many of the patterns call for Blue Sky Alpaca's Organic cotton, which is pretty affordable and not too hard to find (and probably my all-time fave cotton yarn). By far the best baby knitting book I've found.

If you're even considering buying this book, just do it! It was given to me as a gift, and it is probably my favorite knitting book! The instructions in the back of the book are very good. It was the first time I'd seen a yarnover explained in a way that I could understand. The natural yarns are absolutely gorgeous, as are the colors and the photography. This is a stunning book on top of having cute patterns that are clear, easy to follow, beautiful, and satisfying to make. It's fabulous!

I adore this book! I went on a hunt not to long ago for a unique baby sweater pattern that wasn't too hokey, out-dated, gaudy, or overly simplified. I wanted something special...I finally found that perfect design in this book. I rarely purchase knitting books, but this one is a must-have for anyone who does baby knitting.

The thing I like most about this book is how the designer takes a pattern and demonstrates how the user can make that item for either a boy or a girl. For example, the baby kimono on the cover of the book is the girls' version with picot edging, but there is a more masculine boy's version without the detailing. The same goes for a pair of booties, which are shown in traditional form for a boy, and with flower embroidery and ribbon for a girl. There are 3 innovative Mommy sweaters; one adjustable sweater for pregnancy and two attractive pieces which accommodate nursing. No need to buy the natural/organic yarns used in the book; as with all patterns, yarn can be easily substitued by matching gauge.

Instructions are clear for the intermediate knitter, and an appendix demonstrates seaming techniques--although it lacks the one I needed for the Jasmine lace-edged sweater (I eventually figured out through trial and error). Another thing I didn't particularly like is the aesthetics of the square shaping under the arms of the sweaters. The 'procedure' for arm shaping is simple, but I think curved shaping would look better. All in all, however, I find this book extremely delightful and I will be knitting many of the patterns.

If you are knitter and you know someone who is pregnant, this is the book for you. The baby patterns are precious but the pregnant and nursing mother patterns are even better. Very clever sweater designs for wear during the pregnancy and for discreet nursing once the little one arrives.

A really nice book of baby items. I am currently working on the cover sweater in the boy version. Lion brand had a similar one on line, but I preferred this one, and am using the Lion cashmere blend as a substitute. The directions are clear but not for the real beginner. Have marked off several others in the book that I might make. Worth it overall.

I couldn't care less if the animal or plant my yarn came from was given spa treatment before harvesting. That said, this book is a must have if you like heirloom-quality patterns or are a fan of Debbie Bliss and/or Erica Knight.

With the exception of the adult-size sweaters, the patterns are mostly done in DK weight yarns, on straight needles (including the hats), and in needle sizes typical to the yarn and patterns (sizes 3-6).

There is a boy version and a girl version for 6 patterns. Singular patterns have an equal number of boys patterns and girls patterns. Yarns can easily be substituted.

The adult sweaters (one for maternity and two for nursing) are pretty in their symplicity and practical in their use (the maternity sweater has ties on the side bottom to let out as your tummy gows. The nursing sweaters have buttons down the front on each side like princess seams to make easy-access nursing.) They are done in Worsted Weight yarns, on size 7-8 straight needles. There is also a nursing shawl done in a hole-y leaf-lace pattern.


Don't let the lack of circular needles deter you. Some people--including us experienced ones--just like to do it the traditional way on straight needles. And professionals know that seaming makes for stronger, longer lasting seams--which is what "Heirloom" is all about.

What a find! I'm forever searching for new and fun baby knitting patterns, and this one has them, with the added bonus of a few for mom, too! I especially love that the sweaters that show a variation for girls and boys don't just suggest a different color yarn, but actually offer pattern changes for feminine or masculine touches to the edging or trim. The hat and booties, although listed separately, coordinate with at least two of the sweaters, just in case you want to make a set. Clear instructions to help a beginner along, but advanced enough patterns that experienced knitters won't be bored. My favorite pattern book in a long time.

Just going to keep it simple: this book is not that great. If you enjoy seaming, you may just like it, but I find the patterns to be quite boring. My fave is the maternity sweater, but other than that, nothing I can't live without. Will be returning.

I didn't care for this book as much as I had hoped. I like the finer knits for babies and this one used dk and worsted weight yarns instead of the fingering yarn I was looking for. If the cover had stated that I would not have bought the book. However since I like most of the patterns I am going to adapt the patterns to the yarn that I like.
