Mary Jo Ayres serves up 160 pages of themed activities for children learning letters and letter sounds, offering a host of suggestions for arts and crafts, tactile experiences, games, related play and fieldtrips for every letter of the alphabet. She winds up with recipes for finger and face paint, dyes for noodles and rice, cornstarch clay and all sorts of other gooey stuff, plus simple food recipes; Ayres also includes directions for crafts and fingerplays.

Her audio cassette is a series of simple, short, repetitive songs illustrating letter sounds, that young children to follow and sing along with easily. A 1998 Parents' Choice® Silver Honor.

This book is a cheap imitation of a book I found after I bought this one ("Letter of the Week" by the MAILBOX). It has very few reproducibles, and most of the ideas do not give many details. For example, for Letter A it says "Learn about animals, antelope, alligators, and anteaters."

If you are looking for a book to make your life easier, this is not it.

What I love about this book is that it takes all of the ideas that I have found and puts them into one simple book. There is so much to choose from. You don't need a lot of reproducibles because it is designed so that the child creates the activities. I found the activities easy, cheap and fun. My daughter learns the letter the first day! I love the songs too. I am a past third grade teacher that is homeschooling preschool. This book is great!
