This review is from: Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care: Including A to Z Guide to Natural and Synthetic Chemicals in Cosmetics (Paperback)
This is one of most scientifically based books I have read on skin and hair care. From the listings of natural and synthetic chemicals in this book, I have been able to identify the chemicals in products I have been using that caused severe damage to my hair and scalp. I have seen several doctors over the past 10 years and have been given prescribed medication and shampoos to cure my problem - with no effectiveness. I have even used (supposedly) natural shampoos and conditioners from health food stores. I discovered that I was using products with synthetic chemicals (probably used as preservatives) that are listed in Aubrey Hampton's book. All of the products I've been using had some or many synthetic chemicals in them.

Based on the information in I've been reading in Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care, I have developed my own skin care and scalp treatments. I started noticing improvement in my skin daily. It took about 3 weeks for my scalp problem to clear up completely. I've been using Aubrey's Selenium Shampoo also, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND for those who want to correct their hair and scalp problems. I continue use a leave-on conditioner I developed. I am a black woman and I have very kinky hair. My hair has stopped falling out and breaking off in large quantities. This book, Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care is backed up with SOUND, SCIENTIFIC information. Aubrey Hampton has presented information about his experiences and those of his peers working in this field as a chemists, as well. I cannot thank Aubrey Hampton enough for the time and commitment he made to create this book. It has helped me tremendously.

If you want to know the FACTS and HAVE GOOD RESULTS and SAVE YOUR MONEY, BUY THIS BOOK!!! You must be patient. Nothing so GOOOD comes comes easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care: by Aubrey Hampton, August 14, 2003

This review is from: Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care: Including A to Z Guide to Natural and Synthetic Chemicals in Cosmetics (Paperback)
Among the many books I have recently read, I rate Aubrey Hampton's book NATURAL ORGANIC HAIR AND SKIN CARE above them all. If I could give this book 10 stars for a rating, I would give it to emphasize the invaluable information this book provides. Also, I highly recommend the Natural Soap Book and The Soap Maker's Companion by Susan Miller Cavitch. She is a chemist and maker of the products described in her books. She provides comprehensive, scientifically sound information about the natural ingredients she uses in soapmaking. Also, the Natural Soap book has a recipe for a shampoo soap. ONE BOOK I DO NOT RECOMMEND: In her book, The Natural Way to Super Beauty, Mary Ann Crenshaw makes negative statements about the use of natural oils for topical skin use or treatments contrary to what other authors state and back up with scientific studies and results based on their work as scientists and experiences in their field. Ms Crenshaw does not back up her statements with scientific evidence and studies to support her claims against the use of natural oils for topical skin care. Yet she recommends using regular commercial makeup to protect skin from sun damage (which can contribute to clogging and enlarging pores, irritating and aging skin). She mentions statements made by some companies that disclaim any benefits natural oils can have on the skin through topical use. These companies historically used and continue to use synthetic ingredience and ineffective fillers in their VERY EXPENSIVE products. This is an example comparative to doctor's disclaiming the benefits of natural foods, vitamins and herbs vs. medications and drugs. My own experiences with the use and benefits of natural oils for topical skin and body care, have proven to me that Ms Crenshaw is dead wrong.

Aubrey Hampton provides the scientific background, studies, and the performance history of the ingredience and products (natural and synthetic) that are listed in his book. His book helped me identify the destructive chemicles in products I have been using that caused damage to my hair and scalp.

For approximately 10 years I've had a chronic scalp infection for which I've been getting ineffective medical treatment for. Based on the benefits I read about NATURAL OILS, I used a combination of Flax, Hemp and Evening Primose oils with Aloe Vera on my scalp and hair. My scalp problem diminished significantly, in just one week. I did experience some slight irritation after 3 days of using this solution on my scalp (Aubrey Hampton cautions the careful use of Evening Primrose oil on the skin's surface in his book). Subsequently, upon 3 weeks of using this combination of oils, my scalp problem disappeared. (I am black and have very wavy hair). I decided to buy Aubrey Hampton's - Selenium Natural Blue shampoo for the treatment of my damaged hair. I've developed my own leave-in hair conditioner and skin care program based on information I read his book. I am thoroughly happy with the results. The NATURAL ORGANIC HAIR AND SKIN CARE book has helped above and beyond my expectations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aubrey tells it like it is, May 26, 2001
This review is from: Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care: Including A to Z Guide to Natural and Synthetic Chemicals in Cosmetics (Paperback)
Granted, Aubrey doesn't back his claims fastidiously by science. However, anyone who's ever compared aloe vera straight from the plant to that sticky-dry film that forms on your skin when you get synthetically-laced aloe vera can attest to the validity of his claims. Plus, it's good to read someone who's not exactly logical or concerned with being PC. Plenty of info for vegetarians, and my only complaint is since there's several different charts and dictionaries, it could be better organized. However, Aubrey knows his stuff. I used avocado oil at his recommendation for some eczema I had, and it cleared up within a week.

While this book contains useful information on natural and synthetic cosmetic ingredients, wading through Aubrey Hampton's strongly-held opinions is not really worth the effort. He fails to differentiate his beliefs from scientific fact, and resorts to sweeping statements that are not verifiable (e.g., "a full head of hair is a sign of health" -- hmmm -- has anyone told Michael Jordan??) His arguments are full of holes -- basically, "organic" ingredients are better because he says they are. Don't misunderstand -- I am a great believer in plant-based cosmetics and therapeutic remedies. I believe they are usually more effective and less dangerous than those derived from animal or petrochemical sources. But Hampton's bad science and poorly constructed arguments will fail to convince those people who need the most convincing -- those who have not yet discovered the value of plant-based cosmetics and medicinals on their own.

This is a very informative, highly useful book with sound basic facts and information.

I have been impressed with the amount of scientific knowledge and factual information in this book and would highly recommend it to any one who would like to get away from the chemical assault from mass produced skin can hair care products.

Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars a keeper, November 28, 2006

I read this book years ago and have been using his products almost exclusively. I do buy my makeup at department stores and they always ask me if I use their "cleansing" products too because my skin is so beautiful. Not on your life!!!! I turned to Aubrey after years of department store products where my skin had become dry, flaky, and irritated. Now I spend the bare minimum and use the bare minimum and my skin has never been better. I follow the routine he recommends in his book. It truly is a keeper.

I bought this book 4 years ago and I am still referring to it! This book has a wonderful dictionary of cosmetic ingreadents and what they are. It also explains natural ingredients like Jojoba, Avacado oil, and Rose Hip Seed etc. It explains their properties, and how to use them.I wish more books were like this. My only complaints are that the recipes are hard to follow (I use other books for that) and that my book is falling apart at the seams and needs to be replaced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative!, October 12, 2008
This review is from: Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care: Including A to Z Guide to Natural and Synthetic Chemicals in Cosmetics (Paperback)
This is one of those books that at least one person in every family should have. It's a great resource and it's loaded with so much information. If you're into making your own natural skin care products, shampoos, etc., this book is a must. It's educational and it's fun. I can guarantee you that once you start to get into it, you'll never look at store bought products the same way again.

5.0 out of 5 stars WELL-WRITTEN!, May 6, 2007
This review is from: Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care: Including A to Z Guide to Natural and Synthetic Chemicals in Cosmetics (Paperback)
Aubrey masterfully provides well-researched information on early herbal medicine along with cosmetics to modern-day products. I love the organitoons-funny pictures making fun of big corporate companies and their lies and the great chart chockfull of information on certain benefits of each herb for skin care. This is a great saver, gives you full details for "The Natural Method" for Hair & Skin and will make you feel good about what you do for your body. Also a guide to make sure that you pay for a quality product for your body. The information is funny, true, and helpful. This will really change your life-I love it. There are even recipes for your own skin/hair-care and a list of bad ingredients to avoid. I also recommend Aubrey Organics skin/hair-care. You will love them!
