Book Description

July 1992
This work explores the diverse medicinal uses of more that 250 minerals, plants, and other organic materials, ranging from common foodstuffs, such as honey, to marine creatures like the sea horse. Each ingredient is shown in a full colour A - Z photographic catalogue while the encyclopaedic reference section details the geographical origin and historical uses of each item, its active ingredients, its medicinal uses in different healing systems and the form in which it is prescribed. "The Natural Pharmacy" is a guide to the diversity and powerful properties of these natural healing substances and the origins of natural remedies used in different systems of medicine around the world, ranging from Indian Ayurvedic medicine to Chinese herbalism, in forms as varied as infusions, tinctures, tablets, powders and ointments.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Up to 40 percent of all pharmaceuticals in use today in industrialized countries are derived from natural sources, and at least 80 percent of the world's population relies almost totally on natural medicines. Consequently, there is a continual supply of new books on herbal medicine, of which this is an attractive example. The Natural Pharmacy is appealing and affordable; it features an introduction to various types of natural medicine, and then covers 230 animal, vegetable, and mineral ingredients. It includes a description and excellent photos of both the natural ingredient and its prepared form, plus explanations of the properties and uses of each. There is also a brief section of home remedies and how to prepare infusions, decoctions, syrups, and more. The book doesn't offer much new information, but it's a good choice for libraries needing a basic overview of the subject.
