Editorial Reviews

Album Notes Natural Selection: Elliot Erickson, Frederick Thomas.Combine Prince's influence with traces of the System and a dose of hip-hop, and you've got Natural Selection, a male duo that consisted of Elliot Erickson and Frederick Thomas and showed some promise on this self-titled effort. Although the CD is rather uneven and doesn't fall into the essential category, the group's R&B/pop hooks can be catchy. Unlike so many of the urban contemporary songs recorded in the early 1990s, likable numbers like "Hearts Don't Think (They Feel)," "Bum Rush (Your Heart)" and "Do Anything" are the work of a group that was striving for originality, as opposed to being content to sound like the product of a musical assembly line. Despite its shortcomings, Selection had more heart and integrity than most of the urban contemporary acts that debuted in 1991. But regrettably, the obscure group fell through the cracks and disappeared without getting a chance to develop. ~ Alex Henderson

4.0 out of 5 stars Still not bad, October 18, 2004

I'm surprised we didn't hear more of Natural Selection in the early 1990's. I was in high school when the CD came out and was drawn in by the single 'Do Anything'. 'Hearts don't think they feel' was also a single. After high school I studied piano, percussion, and composition in college and after all that, I still think this is a decent attempt at pop music and I've held onto it even though selling most of my other early 90's CD's. There is an obvious Prince influence throughought the album and the hit single had to compete with Prince's 'Cream' from the Diamonds & Pearls album. If 90's music is ever to become a 'genre' like 80's music has, I recommend Natural Selection as one of the most noteworthy, but overlooked, works of the early part of that decade. At the used prices it is worth hearing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Natual Selection, April 21, 2003

Not bad... Standout song of course is the hit single featuring Niki Harris (famous for being Madonna's backup singer & releasing 3 of her own albums:see nikiharris.com) but this cd lacks in some areas...with mostly filler music sounding like scraps from Prince, they still pull it off because scraps from Prince is still good music! Neither here nor there.

Another victim of copyright issues I suppose. It seems NO ONE has this available as a download. All iTunes has is this stupid karaoke version.

When i first heard this song in the 90s, i thought it was by Prince... Then as years passed, you never hear it and can't remember what it was called or who did it. Then a long drawn out search to figure out what it was was made a little easier thanks to the internet.

I finally broke down and bought the CD here on amazon - it was cheap enough - only got it for Do Anything.... the rest of the cd sounded like 3rd rate filler, but I didn't really give it a good listen. Typical one hit wonder, but I really like the niki harris banter.

Oh, and while I'm soapboxing, trying to find ACCURATE, complete lyrics for this song is impossible as it seems lyric sites lift from each other and if one has them wrong, they all do. I compiled my own which i think is more than complete and attempted to upload them to some lyric sites but they never accepted them so I posted them on my own site as a PDF. if anyone is interested, you can contact me for the direct link as it doesn't show in google search.
