This book covers it all. If you're looking for alternative methods for treating COPD or any lung disease, then I would recommend this book. It's very well organized and informative and covers just about everything involving COPD, it's causes, and the various treatments available. There's no fluff here.

At age 56, I have suffered from COPD/Emphysema for 10 years and now I am approaching the end stage. My medical care has been through Cleveland Clinic in Florida and I hold a master's degree BUT DESPITE THESE 'APPARENT' ADVANTAGES, I WAS SO IN THE DARK UNTIL I READ THIS BOOK. I did not know how to make my breathing easier and the quality of my life better, especially if it meant making nutritional changes. Apparently, my doctors and other allied professionals did not seem to know either because no one was able to help me even if I asked.
COPD patients suffer to varying degrees with chronic mucus production, chronic inflammation and bronchoconstriction. FINALLY, this book helped me to take charge and I gave up all dairy products, red meat, white flour and gluten products, fried and processed foods, and added supplements and herbs. By making these changes and more I gleaned from this book (like acupuncture), I have improved so significantly. Will it extend my life? Not sure but it sure makes life so much better. I cannot recommend this book more highly. It should be given to every single person at the time they are first diagnosed and I am sure they will live a lot longer.

This book gave me what I'd hoped for. Answers that satisfy my demand to know WHY .This is no mere piece of self serving advertisment. This book explains how your lungs work and what foods ( for example) feed your body's need to constrict your breathing. I cut out two of the foods suggested and within days, noticed a positive change. That's great, sure, but what is really great is this book explains on the cellular level, WHY it works the way it does.

Alternative Options,
This review is from: Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD: Relief and Healing for Chronic Pulmonary Disorders (Paperback)
I was recently diagnosed with COPD and told to puff on an inhaler once a day, probably for the rest of my life. I ordered some books on the subject and this book offers lots of alternatives to the drugs that I just refuse to take. I asked to go to a specialist and have been told that my problem is mild and I don't have to use an inhaler. It was well worth questioning and this book gives you the confidence to do so.

Very Helpful - In Providing Information,
This review is from: Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD: Relief and Healing for Chronic Pulmonary Disorders (Paperback)
One of the things I learned right away while reading this book is that the Oregano essential oil I was taking -- 2 drops on the tongue, as recommended on the back of the bottle -- was simply not enough to fight the battle against infection and mucus and that I needed to take 14 drops in 2 ounces of water twice a day! I also learned that the N-Acetylcysteine I was taking, too, was an insufficient amount. Sometimes we think an alternative approach doesn't work when, in fact, our knowledge as to how to use these alternative methods is simply incomplete or very weak. Oregano oil, super strength, is one superior supplement in the fight against COPD, although this book reveals a whole arsenal of supplements, herbs, teas and techniques exists as well that I did not know existed.A skilled reader can move through this book in a few short hours. By skilled reader, I mean a human being who can identify medical cant and filler and discard it quickly while focusing on the target of practical and usable information. There is, for example, a whole chapter on quitting smoking. If you already know you have COPD or emphysema, do you need to read about quitting smoking -- really? The opening chapters, too, give medical perspectives on the lungs and the various COPD ailments pertaining to them that just fill space and pages. The practical and skilled reader is seeking natural therapies, not conventional medical analyses and descriptions. Thus, this book, only 177 pages long (excluding the Index and Glossary), could easily be a booklet, but this is a minor complaint. Here's the thing: this work is packed with helplful information for alternative therapies. Dealing with COPD is complicated. This book sets out a "plan" through diet, supplements, and practices that, if followed strictly -- and blindly -- has the potential to drive any ill person batty with the do-this/don't-do-that/eat-this/don't-eat-that, buy-this/don't-buy-that approach. Each person suffering from COPD has different needs, different incomes, and different expectations. Dr. Green's approach is to write as if to suggest his plan is a one-size-fits-all, but how could it be otherwise? I picked what I needed out of his buffet and left the rest. I was glad to have confirmed that my switch to gluten-free breads and cereals is very helpful for COPD sufferers. That's one thing less on the list of things I have to be concerned about now, my wheat intake and its role in COPD. For myself, practically all of the supplements I've been taking -- with the exception of selenium (which also helps in radiation poisoning) -- have been previous to reading this book in insufficient amounts to help. Secondly, I will avail myself of the herb tinctures that Dr. Green recommends, especially those that are both expectorants and anti-inflammatory. While I've heard for years that eggs -- and cheese -- are mucus-producing, this book gave me the motivation to dump the idea of consuming eggs -- and cheese -- as a source of protein. I will follow his suggestion to eat chicken, turkey, quinoa and fresh fish as he suggests instead -- along, of course, with nuts and black bean soup.

The author uses 177 pages for what could probably be written on 5 - 10 pages. The content is terrible, especially the first two chapters (1. Essential respiratory Anatomy and Physiology and 2. Understanding COPD and Emphysema)which are not well organized and are more like studying to beomce a doctor, versus advice for a person wanting to know the practicalities of identifying and then how to deal with COPD. Also, you can find much better advice elswhere for dietary considerations -- the two chapters (5. Dietary Therapeutics and 6. Dietary Supplements) are very weak -- many of the heart disease books sold on Amazon do a much better job with thiese topics. I didn't read in detail the chapter on quitting smoking (4.) because I don't have that concern but it also seemed weak. There has to be better books on this subject elsewhere -- I will continue to look for others.
