Our child will have a normal life, thanks to the info in this book,
This review is from: Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in Natural Treatments (Paperback)
This book is perfect for families looking for "alternative" treatments for tics syndromes. Our elementary school child had frequent tics which were not resolving on their own. We did not want to put him on drugs because of all the possible side effects that people we knew had told us about. This book explains possible causes of tics and gives terrific suggestions and things to try with your child. We started off with avoiding some of the triggers that the author Sheila Rogers mentions. Amazingly, after a week the tics went away!! This gave us confidence that this wasn't some permanent condition that we just had to live with. Once we understood more about how a faulty immune system could likely be an underlying cause, something the book describes well, we found a doctor to help us with testing and natural treatments--so far it has mostly been diet change and over the counter supplements. The book also helps guide you to the right kind of doctor for this, since most neurologists today still tend to teach acceptance or provide drugs. I see this book as a 'must read' before going the route of drugs. Our son's tics are completely gone and we no longer have to avoid as many triggers now that his immune system is stronger. The side benefits are that our son is sleeping better and has more energy. It scares me to think we could have put him on drugs to mask the symptoms instead of addressing the underlying cause. Families reading this should know that the book doesn't give a one-size-fits-all formula, which unfortunately doesn't seem to exist yet, but rather a list of things that you can try with your child. The parent must still be a detective and the process takes diligence. I have spent countless hours searching the internet for solutions, and I thought this book provided by far the most comprehensive explanation I have ever seen about what can cause tics and what can be done to minimize and even eliminate them. The book has not only the theory, but also practical ideas that really make a difference. The success stories alone are touching and very encouraging. Our family is proof that the methods can work. It is such a joy and relief to see my son so happy and his face and body so relaxed.

My son was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome a few years ago. We went through the wringer with everything from anti-ADHD agents to anti-depressants, etcetera. What I have found is that he is 150% better...but only because of natural remedies. Vitamin supplementation, diet, exercise, and cognitive strategies have been far more helpful than the poisons the psychiatrist prescribed. However, I am not anti-medication...I am only anti-med when it comes to my son's treatment. Why? Because the psych meds just don't seem to work for him.I think it's sad that so many parents out there blindly follow the "doctor's orders." If your child has been diagnosed with TS, please buy this book. It's worth a try. Also, check out Latitudes and BrainTalk. Both are online communities that have tons to offer in the way of alternative treatments and support/friendship. If your child is worse on the meds...If you're sick of the doctors not listening...If you're scared of long-term med side-effects...If you've reached the end of your rope...Remember: nothing changes if nothing changes. It's worth a try. There is hope to be had...

After a diagnosis of Tourettes Syndrome a few month ago, and hearing that my 12 year old would "grow out of it" from the medical community, I decided to investigate on my own. My son also has eczema, allergies (environmental and food) and asthma. Being on too much medicine already for a child (in my opinion), another prescription was out of the question. This book is a God-send! I see our situation throughout the book, and Sheila J. Rogers has written in a way that is easy to understand. She provides hope and practical information that I have already put into action (and I'm only half way through the book!). The book does not demean the medical community, but offers an alternative to us who refuse to believe that this is how our loved one has to be. The advice in this book is sound commonsense from reputable sources backed by experience from families of children with TS. I highly recommned this book as a vital key in helping your loved one. Whether your loved one is newly diagnosed, on medication, or you just suspect there is something "wrong"... you need this book!

I am an RN and am conditioned to favor very scientific researched evidence. Although I appreciated the books attempts to link things such as fluoride, aspartame, pesticides, mold, yeast overgrowth, and allergies to Tourette Syndrome, it seemed that most of all links were "hearsay" and letters from readers. It would say something like "many people report that eating sweet increases their tics."Of course I believe that having a healthy body (exercising, eating well, sleeping enough) will make anyone's tics better, I couldn't buy into the stretched logic that drinking fluoride in water exacerbates tics. After reading it I just felt completely frustrated like everything from the dust in the air to the sugar in my sons corn cereal was making his tics worse. I finally went online and watched this hour long Tourette seminar from the leading Yale expert Dr. John Walkup and I felt enormously better. You can get to it by going to the Tourette Syndrome association website and clicking on the newly diagnosed link. I was able to get the facts that I was craving. I hope I haven't offended anyone, that wasn't my intention. This book simply wasn't what I was looking for.

Keep our kids off drugs,

This book is a must for anyone who has even the slightest suspicion children or friends may have tics, immune system dificulties, allergies and behaviour problems. If this book had been published 5 years ago it would have saved our family from a lot of frustration and heartache. Finally someone has put all the theories and backed up knowledge in one book. Thank-you for restoring our sanity. Our three children were diagnosed with Tourette's, and we thought it was the end of the world. This book helped us resolve the symptoms drug free.
People have to read this book before accepting the medical professions treatment of drugs for these issues. It will make life so much easier and help people understand the effects of modern day living on our children and coming generations.

This was an informative book. There certainly is hope for those suffering from these disorders that doesn't necessarily have to involve dangerous drugs. I am a candidate for a doctorate as a Naturopath and will use this in my resource library. The question to always ask is what is my body/mind trying to tell me with regard to my symptoms. This book will guide you to look at the symptoms and ask those questions. It will also help you begin your journey by suggesting various avenues to explore. It leaves the reader with a sense of hope for successfully treating the root causes naturally. Treatment can be multi-faceted, often like putting together a puzzle. The end result makes it worth all the time and energy spent. Hope is something soarly lacking in most medical resources for these disorders, that makes this book all the more valuable.

Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in Natural TreatmentsAs a concert-pianist, music therapist, author, and an individual living with Tourette Syndrome, I must "take my hat off" to Sheila Rogers for bringing together a cascade of knowledge by various doctors, pediatric neurologists, authors and many other leading authorities. As there is no cure for Tourette Syndrome, parents, families and adults are desperately seeking out new innovations and ideas with the hope that somewhere a new approach/approaches will come to the forefront. This book offers exactly what so many have been looking for, thought provoking ideas without the side-effects of medication, approaches that are natural and display underlying common sense! Since reading the book, I have followed many of the innovative ideas and have found improvement in my own tics. As a music therapist, which is also a natural, non side effect technique, I have incorporated the many findings in this book with my own student's! BRAVO! SHEILA J. FINALLY!!,

This review is from: Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in Natural Treatments (Paperback)
This book offers a such a practical approach to addressing tic disorders! While I do not suffer from tics or tourette's, I have friends and coworkers with children that do! I have also shared this book with some friends who are getting thier PHD in Neuropsychology! I think being your own "detective" is the key to trying to get better -- to use preventative medicine by identifying and then avoiding those triggers that can make your condition worse! The case studies are heartwarming and inspiring and I look forward to the day when alternative or non-drug approaches will be more widely recognized as healthy and effective options for not only tics and tourettes, but other disorders and ailments too! A must-read for adults with or parents of children with tics and Tourettes.

Tourette's is no tragedy!,
By Nicholas Thompson "Nicholas Thompson" (Saint Petersburg, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in Natural Treatments (Paperback)
As far as I know this is the first book that seriously entertains causative factors outside of genetics and self repression of symtoms for tic flareups and other tourette's (and related disorders) symptoms. While the book may be criticized in some quarters for focusing heavily on specific anecdotes I think patients, parents and professionals can all benefit by paging through it. If something jumps out at you and helps you it will certainly save you untold stress, time and money not to mention the near term side effects and long term unknowns of perscription medications. One thing I might emphasize is that chronologically outgrowing these "disorders" or simply moving geographically is often the cure that works best. Best wishes to everyone!
