5.0 out of 5 stars The New Wave of Funk, August 21, 2000
By
This review is from: Naturally Preserved, Wetlands Preserve, NYC 5.21.00 (Audio CD)
Uncle Sammy is a Boston band who blend jazz, funk, rock, reggae, and everything else that might pop into their heads in a masterpiece of modern fusion. This album, a live recording of a show I was at, is Uncle Sammy at their best. The basslines snap and pop, the guitars are funky, the keys are plentiful but never overdone, and the drum and percussion work borrows from several different styles, making Uncle Sammy one of those bands you can't quite put into a bin at the record store. For your guitar heroes, there is the intricate fretwork on "Sociology," while purgatory burns with an Afro-Cuban bounce. The energy with which the band attacks "Teen Town" is exactly what music should be all about. You could easily dance to these great funk workouts or simply sit in your chair and marvel at the musicianship while they burn you into a fine ash. Overall, this album is a great document of one of the great new wave of funk/jam bands (Jiggle the Handle, Deep Banana Blackout, etc.).

2.0 out of 5 stars Uncle Sammy, September 12, 2009

The music is great. This was my first experience with SAMMY and I found it very tastie. The reason for the rating was not musical quality but rather the quality of the disk. The last track or two is defective and skips. I don't think I will buy a used item again.
