The Great Outdoors,
By Rawr Dragon "J - R" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Nature of California, 2nd: An Introduction to Familiar Plants, Animals & Outstanding Natural Attractions (Waterford Field Guides) (Paperback)
Searching for a field guide is rather frustrating I suppose. Originally my plans were to get a book that can help me identify plants out in parks, marshes, and in urban areas in the South Bay area of Los Angeles.Going through Amazon's searches, I found all sorts of books but mostly focusing on the wilder side of California such as deserts or exotic plants most likely found in rich, flourishing forests of the North (San Gabriel Mountains). The face of the South Bay is mostly an urban one, where parks are scarce and lands are filled with homes or oil refineries. The point is, most of the books found on the first page is not practical to me, someone who visits parks, marshes and whatnot from time to time due to the distances of the real great outdoors. Of course there are some available throughout the county but again, what I had in mind for its use is something for traveling around the neighborhood, or walking along my college campus and basically learn about the environment around *me*. The Nature of California is a great book because already I can I identify some plants and animals listed in the book and they just happen to be outside my front yard. A great start, for this price compare to others it's indeed a great purchase. I actually picked one up for $11.95USD at a local Barns and Nobles but don't tell that to Amazon! :X Alright, so at this point you're probably wondering about the cons. Well.. the con is that I wish there was more information. While it has nice colored illustrations, names, scientific name, a short description, habitat and comments. I was hoping for it to explain it's origins too, like the reason for its name and whatnot. You know, neat little facts such as a Dandelion, how it's name is really Teeth (or is it tooth?) of a Lion, and it's because of the pattern of the leaves. That sort of thing. But it's very brief but then again, that's just me, I tend to approach these things rather scientifically as well as being curious about origins. It'd be cool if there were more sections on plants, roughly five out of seven of the book consists on all sorts of animals but leaving the remaining two on trees/shrubs and wild flowers. However, because this is meant to be a general approach to California and curious about what the state has to offer this is a perfect book for someone who wants to start looking in the backyard, parks, and beaches. A casual approach, a way to get outside and just check out what's out there. It;s filled with 2x3 illustrations of specimens. The best part is the list of natural attractions and sanctuaries one can go to explore at as well. Anyhow, I hope this was helpful, it took me some time to find what I was looking for based on what I saw around here. I hope this saves time for others. Thanks for checking this review out. See ya!

This review is from: The Nature of California, 2nd: An Introduction to Familiar Plants, Animals & Outstanding Natural Attractions (Waterford Field Guides) (Paperback)
This is a great resource of the common life forms of California. The book makes for a rewarding experience because, since the plants and animals are common, the chances of successfully finding out what you're seeing are likely. I would love to see this book made into a 2nd version that covered only Northern California.
