Teaching Ecology to Little Ones, January 3, 2009
This review is from: Nature Discovery In My Backyard (Paperback)
I am striving to be more environmentally aware in my home. I have often wondered how I can pass these values on to my young children without frightening them with scary tales of greenhouse gases.
Nature Discovery In My Backyard is the perfect book for sharing lofty ideas about ecology with little ones.
The book follows a little girl who is exploring her yard. She finds interesting things like a butterfly, a praying mantis, a bluebird, and soft, green grass.
Things that captivate your child when you are outside together make for great "mini nature lessons."
The rhyming text and the beautiful illustrations never fail to hold my child's attention.
I especially love reading nonfiction books to preschoolers, because their minds are so absorbent. I enjoy filling hungry minds with factual information.
Nature Discovery In My Backyard has a Tips For Nature Discovery section, to give parents and educators good ideas for exploring nature with children year-round.
The Nature Notes in the back of Nature Discovery In My Backyard give more detailed information about things like animals you might see, the life cycle of butterflies, and interesting facts about leaves. These Nature Notes are a big help for parents for answering questions from inquiring minds!

Nature study for the youngest child, October 20, 2008
This review is from: Nature Discovery In My Backyard (Paperback)
The world is full of wonder all around, even in your own backyard! Take a few moments with the young child in your life to look around, learn about and explore nature closest to you and use "Nature Discovery in My Backyard" as a catalyst for discussion. Best for toddlers to age 5, the picture book shows many common species and items you'd expect to see just outside your door: a maple leaf, bee, blue jay, dragonfly, butterfly and pinecone (just to name a few). Real pictures of a little girl exploring nature have been digitally altered into watercolor like illustrations covering the entirety of each page spread. Special educational insets on every other page provide pictures for discussion for each topic covered. Parents and educators will find the notes and tips for nature discovery in the back of the book useful for further exploration. Best of all, the book is environmentally friendly, printed on 100% post-consumer waste. My only criticism is that we would be hard-pressed to find some of the examples in the book in our backyard: a porcupine, lady slipper, praying mantis and buckeye tree? Not typically around here.

The graphics are stunning!, September 19, 2008
This review is from: Nature Discovery In My Backyard (Paperback)
My son just loved this book. The graphics are reminiscent of photographs with watercolor paint washed over them, just beautiful. The messages for the child are simple and my son really embraced the ideas that nature right in your own backyard can be enjoyed through all our senses, and it made him want to go explore our yard in a new way. There's also a lot of ideas and information for parents in the back of the book which I found very helpful and inspiring.
