A true gift of understanding - not rote learning, July 21, 2010
I first acquired this book way back in 1981 and was not looking forward to drudging through another thick and pretentious book about law. However, I was truly surprised by what I discovered and now almost 30 years later I still own this book and tell people about it whenever I get the right opportunity. Many students who aspire to law school, and anyone who seeks to learn about law, commonly find themselves confronted by an attitude that information about the law should require groveling and begging. Any actual understanding will then be dosed out in purposeful complexity just to prove to you that you don't really meet the criteria to actually understand this stuff. It is so pompous!
However, this book cuts through all of that horrid pretentiousness and discloses a wonderful understanding of the law, its history, and how and why it works. Learning about law from this book is actually fun! And the depth of understanding the comes as a result of working through this book will put you head and shoulders ahead of anyone who has missed this gem. Truly, if you have any aspiration around legal environs then you owe it to yourself to get this book. For example, when explaining the concepts of search and seizure you are walked through a history of how the legal concepts evolved. Why did it change and evolve the way it did? What do you need to know now in order to understand how it works today? Examples are provided that highlight specific aspects of the topic. And challenges are provided to see it you have developed enough understanding to resolve complex issues yourself. By the time you have passed through an aspect of the law by working through the section of this book you will have a thorough understanding with enough conceptual thinking that new issues you have never encountered are only a bit of reasoning away from a new understanding. Your newly acquired understanding will empower you to reason legal issues on your own. You will understand the law and its nature.
Now this may sound like work, and it is, but for some reason it is fun! Perhaps it is the feeling of actually grasping important and weighty concepts with such depth of understanding that it makes you feel really smart. It is rewarding. Or perhaps it is the way this book is written that makes you feel like you are actually walking through the history of understanding as it evolved. But whatever magic it is that this book uses you will emerge with a broad understanding of so many important and fundamental concepts and details that it will be a foundation to build a great legal education upon.
I will say it again - anyone who aspires in any way to reach some understanding of law should FIRST read this book. EVERY legal mind should first go through this book. It won't be easy but it will be incredibly rewarding. And the greatest legal mind or the humblest of law lovers will truly benefit from possessing such a strong foundation to build upon.
I will always own this book. And I will always share it with those I care about. Good luck!

Review of Nature and Functions of Law, January 30, 2011
The preview said it was like new; however, the first half of the book is marked through and the binding is loose. Not the quality i was expecting.
