Editorial Reviews

Review

There is no more disturbing or haunting event in philosophy's recent history than that defined by Heidegger's political activities in the 1930s. Those activities and the questions they raise will cast a shadow for a long time to come. The protocols of Heidegger's seminar - precisely translated and thoughtfully introduced - coupled with the excellent critical essays that constitute this volume are decisive texts for those who seek to understand this difficult matter. -- Dennis J. Schmidt, The Pennsylvania State University

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Benedetto Ahagon on February 10, 2014
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This is an expensive purchase but if you want to satisfy your curiosity about what set the detractors on their trail, this is the document. After the first seminar, it reads like one lecture after another. This is secondary source material but some of it is quite valuable, not for its political implications, but for its clarifying value in regard to the legacy itself. The evidence is interesting, but by no means compelling.

12 of 19 people found the following review helpful By Gary E. Davis on November 17, 2013
Format: Hardcover
The book is not by Martin Heidegger. It's a translation of student transcripts from a course that Heidegger chose not to include in his collected works. This is just book business, exploiting simplistic views of philosophy and Heidegger's times. The editors posture their product as part of addressing an issue of Heidegger's political thought, but they're clearly decided about what they think, and this book is just part of marketing a view that has no basis in scholarship.
