This review is from: Nature: Horses (DVD)
This DVD has two shows. The first is titled The Wild Horses of Mongolia with Julia Roberts as the "star". It is a little bit more about horses than "Silence of the Lambs" was about sheep... but not much more. Roberts herself did not always look like she knew what exactly she was doing in Mongolia, and the show was basically a rambling Pollyana semi-salute to the nomads living in Mongolia for whom horses are part of the meager culture. There is some mundane footage of horses, but not much.
The second half of this DVD is titled "Horse and Rider" and rescues this disc from the trash bin. It uses three riding venues, Dressage, Cutting, and Polo to illustrate some generally valuable information about horses and horsemanship but also some good specifics on differences between the roles of horse and rider in the different sports, and that is good. An even nicer touch is that it directs the viewer to observing horses as individuals (with a very good segment showing a skittish Dressage horse under saddle) rather than looking at them as if they were an ATV with nothing more inside than an on/off button. It clearly portrays the rider's roles and responsibilities, and that lesson alone is worth the price of the DVD. |
