First, let me say that the 'espresso' is very well presented, the size is quite nice to handle, especially when taking it with you on a trip and it is extremely well printed. I have my problem with this particular book, especially the title catchline "71 tips from the top'.

As I read this book, cover to cover, I had the impression it was just another picture book by a very fine photographer. the 'tips' really don't explain why you should do these things nor does it specifically tell you how to accomplish them. For any experienced photographer these 'tips' fall short in their presentation as we all do these things automatically. I really don't know who would benefit from reading this book.

This book is part of a new series from the publisher Rocky Nook called "edition espresso". Each is a short book of tips on a different photographic subject.

"Nature and Landscape Photography" is divided into eight sections entitled Thoughtful Photography, Finding the Rhythm, Capturing Light, Landscapes, the Details of Nature, Water, Unleash Your Creativity, and Taking the Next Steps. Within each section are several tips, usually with a page of text and a picture, although some pictures spill across the gutter for a two page tip. Borg's pictures are all excellent, although only one made me gasp as I might for some of the greater photographic artists. The tips are more concerned with image content and a bit of composition than raw technique. Nothing here discusses how to set an exposure, or focus (although the author does suggest where one might focus within the frame.) There is no discussion of equipment, except that the author makes the wise suggestion that a tripod is essential. A typical tip is that bad weather is good weather for a nature photographer.

Normally, I object to tip books because rather than teach a fundamental that can be applied across the board they suggest steps to follow rigorously to get a certain picture. That is not the case here. Instead, for the beginning nature photographer, who may be absorbed with getting a proper exposure or some similar mechanical act, there are some broader suggestions that will help him or her capture an idea. Experienced photographers probably will not derive as much from this book because they will have encountered these ideas over time. However, even though I consider myself experienced, I did find at least one tip I had not encountered before and found the book, which reads quickly, to be a useful refresher.

Out of many photography books, I was attracted by this one because is written by a Swedish photographer. As nature photography is one of my hobbies, and considering I leave in Stockholm, I was expecting subjects, magical hours and type of landscape to be similar to what I encounter here around Stockholm, and I was not disappointed. This is an easy lecture of 71 short tips from Martin Borg, illustrated with his own pictures. A nice feature is the editor's insertion of details about each photography. A beginner to intermediate amateur can really benefit from this tips. Many of them are indeed not new, but some are very interesting.

I would've probably preferred to have more technical details and more of compositional hints, as well as a little bit of the way the photographer reached to that composition or developed the idea that led to the image. But this is not a manual of photography, is just a collection of tips.

With this book Martin Borg manages to make you wish to go out in the nature and practice the tips (which I did, taking advantage of the nice autumn weather that we had during the first week-end after reading the book).

For me, the book was useful for a couple of ideas that I probably read before but I was neglecting, some new hints (like breathing on lens, playing with fantasy vs. reality, revealing nature's strength), as well as for triggering my interest for using neutral density filters.

All in one, the book is a useful and enjoyable reading. I already recommended it to a friend who's starting with photography.
