Manufacturer’s Description

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that fights damaging natural substances known as free radicals. It is incorporated into the fat-based tissues of the body, such as the heart, fat-carrier molecules such as LDL ("bad" cholesterol), and our cell membranes, where it acts to stabilize these structures and protect them from free radical attack. Vitamin E also protects our cells from compounds such as lead, mercury, and other heavy metals. Vitamin E is complimentary to vitamin C, and it’s recommended that people take them together. Water-soluble vitamin E is preferred for people who have difficulty absorbing fat and may suffer from deficiencies consuming fat-soluble vitamins. Because of vitamin E’s strong antioxidant effects, it’s an important part of an individual’s daily regimen, and addresses heart health, men’s and women’s health, longevity, prenatal care, memory, and fitness. People taking blood-thinning medication such as warfarin should use caution when taking high doses of vitamin E. Vitamin E intake should not exceed 1,000 I.U. per day.

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage Vitamin E, December 8, 2008
This review is from: Nature Made Vitamin E 400IU, 300 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
There are several problems with this vitamin E:

1) Its synthetic. Synthetic vitamin E is problematic because the vitamin E molecule has 3 chiral centers. So only 1/2^3, or 1/8 of the material is identical to naturally occuring vitamin E. The other 7 forms have never been studied and may be toxic. Studies performed with synthetic E have shown toxic and damaging effects.

2) Its only alpha tocopherol. There are 3 other tocopherols and 4 other tocotrienols that are in the vitamin E family. The gamma tocopherol form seems to be especaillay important. Taking large doses of the alpha form depletes gamma tocopherol levels.

3) Its esterified (the succinate form I think), which means that its not really an antioxidant. The esterification process removes the reducing capacity of vitamin E.

the bottom line is that this product is junk and probably damaging to your health. The people that say that synthetic E is the same as natural vitamin E dont know what they are talking about. Stereochemistry and chirality are extremely important in biochemistry. For example, amino acids are always in the "L" form, the "D" stereoisomers of some amino acids can be deadly. This product is mostly (about 85%) a collection of random stereoisomers of vitamin E that do not occur naturally. It ought to be illegal to sell this stuff, really.

1.0 out of 5 stars Product bottle shows that it actually contains "dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate" as the main ingredient., February 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nature Made Vitamin E 400IU, 300 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
The description of the ingredients lists "d-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate" as the main ingredient. However, the product bottle indicates that the actual main ingredient is "dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate", an articial and very different version of the advertised ingredient. The Amazon.com listing is very misleading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Product but Misadvertised Quantity, April 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My whole family takes these daily and the taste is great. My only issue with this order is that the label clearly states "(Pack of 3)" yet the packaging only included 1 (qty 240). $9.74 for the product plus $5.99 in shipping is way too much to pay for a single bottle of these vitamins. Lesson learned for next time but would like Amazon to update the ad to reflect that it is only one bottle w/240 chewable tablets.
