1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage Vitamin E, December 8, 2008
This review is from: Nature Made Vitamin E 400IU, 300 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
There are several problems with this vitamin E:

1) Its synthetic. Synthetic vitamin E is problematic because the vitamin E molecule has 3 chiral centers. So only 1/2^3, or 1/8 of the material is identical to naturally occuring vitamin E. The other 7 forms have never been studied and may be toxic. Studies performed with synthetic E have shown toxic and damaging effects.

2) Its only alpha tocopherol. There are 3 other tocopherols and 4 other tocotrienols that are in the vitamin E family. The gamma tocopherol form seems to be especaillay important. Taking large doses of the alpha form depletes gamma tocopherol levels.

3) Its esterified (the succinate form I think), which means that its not really an antioxidant. The esterification process removes the reducing capacity of vitamin E.

the bottom line is that this product is junk and probably damaging to your health. The people that say that synthetic E is the same as natural vitamin E dont know what they are talking about. Stereochemistry and chirality are extremely important in biochemistry. For example, amino acids are always in the "L" form, the "D" stereoisomers of some amino acids can be deadly. This product is mostly (about 85%) a collection of random stereoisomers of vitamin E that do not occur naturally. It ought to be illegal to sell this stuff, really.

1.0 out of 5 stars Product bottle shows that it actually contains "dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate" as the main ingredient., February 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nature Made Vitamin E 400IU, 300 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
The description of the ingredients lists "d-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate" as the main ingredient. However, the product bottle indicates that the actual main ingredient is "dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate", an articial and very different version of the advertised ingredient. The Amazon.com listing is very misleading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Product but Misadvertised Quantity, April 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My whole family takes these daily and the taste is great. My only issue with this order is that the label clearly states "(Pack of 3)" yet the packaging only included 1 (qty 240). $9.74 for the product plus $5.99 in shipping is way too much to pay for a single bottle of these vitamins. Lesson learned for next time but would like Amazon to update the ad to reflect that it is only one bottle w/240 chewable tablets.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nature Made Vitamin E is from a Trusted Company, September 21, 2005
This review is from: Nature Made Vitamin E 400IU, 300 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it is an oil-based vitamin. All the oil based vitamins are stored in the liver or in body fat cells.

From my reading on Vitamin E, this formualtion of Vitamin E, at 400 IU's is perhaps a bit on the high side for dose. The recommended daily allowance (in adults) for Vitamin E set by the FDA is only 15 mg a day. Be aware that many companies sell a 400 IU and even an 800 IU capsule. I have taken Vitamin E in 400 IU doses, but I take it every other day.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that exists in eight different forms. Each form has its own biological activity, which is the measure of potency or functional use in the body [1]. Alpha-tocopherol (á-tocopherol) is the name of the most active form of vitamin E in humans.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and it attaches itself to free radicals (by-products of metabolism that can harm the body), and neutralize them. Vitamin E can have beneficial effects on the skin, the heart, and the immune system. Vegetable oils, nuts, green leafy vegetables, and fortified cereals are common food sources of vitamin E in the United States.

Long-term supplementation (over a year) with Vitamin E has not been adequately studied, so beware of the high dose versions. The idea that "taking more of a beneficial vitamin is better" has not been proven to be true.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shipping a big problem, April 23, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Nature Made Vitamin E 400IU, 300 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
I ordered this item on March 19, 2004 and as of this writing (April 23) have not received it. The tracking information now says I should expect delivery some time in June. For those of you that can wait that long, I guess it's a deal. Seems to me the shipper could get orders to customers faster than 4 months. I'm glad it wasn't something I needed right away.

Very disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Lousy Service, May 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Nature Made Vitamin E 400IU, 300 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
The product is great, but I'm having to continue to buy it at K-Mart. I ordered it here under a special offer in March 2004 with some other items to qualify for free shipping; delayed shipment of this item is holding another in-stock item hostage (they won't ship it separately unless I cancel this item) until this item becomes available, possibly as late as March 2005! I'm just letting the order ride to see how long it takes them! Amazon, you're losing my respect!
