Michael Tobias is one of the most eloquent and brilliant voices on the front lines of the war for the protection of our planet. This book will amaze you and, hopefully, motivate you to action. Buy two copies, as you'll want to share one with a friend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Everyone Concerned About Environmental Protection, December 1, 2011
This book tracks the U.S. Fish and Wildlife and National Park Service efforts to preserve and conserve wild species and wild places throughout North America. Tobias' courageous field work speaks for itself throughout the elegant, deeply moving, feverishly researched non-fiction epic saga of the many men and women risking their lives in the trenches of conservation as they work to save rare species, and protect America's habitat. This is a great book, a must read, and a poignant reminder that our government is, indeed, the best hope for conservation. Those who would argue that "government" is overbearing, need to read this book and appreciate, as I do having read it, how critical the U.S.government is to ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy wilderness areas, national parks, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Preserves. Tobias pays tribute to the many otherwise unheralded heroes who work selflessly 24/7 to protect the biological heritage the founding fathers sought to enshrine in the U.S. Constitution. This is a very telling, moving and emotional read, filled with incredible data, and deeply affecting insights and conclusions.
