Product Description

The Sobakawa Pillow is filled with 100-percent buckwheat hulls. It has been used extensively throughout the Orient for hundreds of years and is still the pillow of choice in Japan. Buckwheat hulls are believed to offer therapeutic benefits far superior to traditional foam and feather pillows. In terms of Oriental medicine, the Sobakawa Pillow offers an important element of human health-having a cool head. The healthiest state of the body is called "ZU-KAN-SOKU-NETSU", meaning cool head and warm feet. Once these elements are out of balance (like warm head and cool extremities), the body is out of sync and hence suffers from a varieties of ailments including insomnia, headache, irritability, stiff neck and sluggishness. The 100-percent cotton fabric casing offers maximum air circulation, is very durable and above all is comfortable for sleeping.

Customer Reviews

This pillow seems well made, but this size is a little too small for those used to common pillow sizes.

This pillow gives very good neck support which provide a great night sleep for anyone that needs good head elevation.

I will probably be buying another one of these pillows, so I'll have it in case this one comes up "missing".

If you have a tricky neck and need your head to stay positioned just so, and stay cooler through the night, this is the pillow to use. At most, it may take a couple of days to get used to. It is heavier than an ordinary Western style pillow and noisier (the husks are crispy). But once you pass out, you won't care.

This arrived in a plastic bag, with a loose paper label and warranty. I'm sure there's some sort of cost-saving/business reason this product does not arrive in the box shown, but it is the pillow I expected and it is working as described. I've owned one before, so I knew what to expect. It is half the size of the average pillow, so I insert it sideways into a standard pillow case; the loose half doesn't bother me.

As I say to all the vendors here at Amazon: your product page would greatly assist potential customers, and make them like you sooner, if you would:

(a) provide scale in the product photo (such as next to a soda can),
(b) post a demo vid or a link to youtube/liveleak/vimeo,
(c) explain what the packaging will be and show that, in addition to the original packaging photo that most people will recognize,
(d) make sure the Product Details and Specifications match up; and
(e) provide a link to a PDF of the manual, if any.

I recommend this product and this vendor for this item.

In search for a "Secret Santa" unisex gift for Christmas with a limit of $20, I wanted to be creative and stray away from the typical candles, throws (blankets), and the like. That's how I stumbled upon this item (a Sobakawa buckwheat pillow). I've actually been in search for a good pillow for myself for some time now because, on top of being a very light sleeper, I am not an "active" sleeper (sometimes, I rarely change positions when sleeping and sometimes I toss and turn, but all in all, I do not move around very often during the night), so I often wake up with a sore neck or not very well rested. I would also like to note that I have a history of chronic migraines, and pillow support is critical to comfort during the times I experience a migraine. There have also been times when I've woken up with migraines because of an unrestful sleep. Sometimes I need a lot of neck support, but I don't like it when my pillows are too soft. Like "Goldilocks and the Three Bears", I was in search for something not too soft, not too hard... but something that was "just right". Typical memory foam type pillows rarely work very well for me because, although they can conform to your shape, I often find that it is uncomfortable when I move around and the pillow needs to re-conform to my new position. Softer and fluffier pillows are usually a for sure "no-go" for me because it is almost a guarantee that I will wake up with achy neck and shoulders.

The Good News: Upon receiving this pillow, I tried it that very night. I woke up the next morning with no complaints in terms of the firmness. It has been about 3 weeks now, and I use this pillow every night. I will likely not be going back to any of my other pillows, though I do have many other types of pillows on the bed (at least 4 kinds).

When I bought my first Sobakawa buckwheat husk pillow over 20 years ago, I could never sleep on another pillow again. Now, after decades of use (including my bringing it to all my travels), it finally started to look worn, so I thought to replace it. The new one I just got from here works just as well. This is now my second one in over 20 years, and I expect it to last. Of course, it needs a bit of breaking in to get that great feel it's known for. But for now, it cradles the head and neck nicely, and works well in wicking heat away from the head, to make sleeping more comfortable. NOTE: Do NOT be fooled by the new synthetic "buckwheat husk" pillows being offered, even by Sobakawa. Nothing beats the original. And there are a variety of reasons for using actual buckwheat vs. synthetics. Check packaging before buying.)

I have been using this pillow for a few weeks now and can't decide if I like it or not. It is definitely hard--not your typical cushy pillow. It also makes a crunching noise every time you move or try to make it fit your head properly. It does give a lot of neck support, and I feel that I rest well with it. However, it is smaller than a standard pillow and so it does not give a lot of lift to your head. I am a side and back sleeper, so I find myself reshaping the pillow a lot in the middle of the night when I have shifted position from my back to my side.

Nothing like this for comfort. Shape it for your head, cool and stays cool through the night, you will never want to sleep with another pillow. The best feature of this pillow is that you can make an indentation for your ear and be comfortable, also push hulls away from your eye area. This really works.

NATURE'S PILLOWS
Wonderful pillow - basically a soft fluffy bean bag you shape around your neck and shoulders - gives excellent cooling support. I bought a Sobakawa pillow many years ago for chronic neck pain - a definite help. Over the years I bought contour foam pillows which worked well, but the Sobakawa has remained my favorite pillow. -Assembled in the USA
