1.0 out of 5 stars Caution on advice found in this book
The book NATURE'S ULTIMATE ANTI-CANCER PILL: THE IP6 WITH INOSITOL QUESTION AND ANSWER BOOK by Coles and Steinman offers some questionable advice. For example, it indicates there no known side effects from IP6, when iron-anemia is possible outcome since IP6 is a mineral chelator. Furthermore, the authors claim the product is safe for pregnant women and children...

4.0 out of 5 stars Promoting a brand?, January 22, 2000

This review is from: Nature's Ultimate Anti-Cancer Pill: The IP-6 with Inositol Question and Answer Book (Paperback)
Though I agree with the previous reviewers and consider this a valuable book, I take issue with the stress the authors put on only buying the Enzymatic Therapies brand of IP6. Though they profess to have no financial interest in the company, they are so insistent about this that I find it hard to believe. Normally when reporting on research it will be pointed out exactly what kind of substance was used in the research. But they stress it over and over, and even go so far as to cast blatant aspersions on other marketers of IP6, with the warning that you may get sick from using other brands. I investigated this a bit and here's what I found out: Enzymatic Therapies brought some other companies to court for selling IP6, but the judge threw the case out because the others weren't selling a combination capsule of IP6 and inositol like ET was. The source of the IP6 in ET's formulation is, as near as I can tell, the exact same source as that sold by, for example, Jarrow Labs. What's the difference besides the fact that it's sold separately from the inositol? PRICE! You can buy pure IP6 and pure inositol in bulk online and just mix your own, and pay less than a third the cost of the ET brand! I have no financial interest in this, I only buy it for my wife who had breast cancer (and the rest of the family takes it too!)... One problem with so many touted cancer cures is that usually you find that the promoter has a financial ax to grind. This case looks suspicious despite the authors' disclaimer. Too bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars First book on IP-6 with Inositol for the consumer..., September 26, 1999
By
kullis@ucla.edu (Santa Monica, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nature's Ultimate Anti-Cancer Pill: The IP-6 with Inositol Question and Answer Book (Paperback)
The "IP-6 with Inositol Question and Answer Book" provides scientific background on IP-6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate) for the layman, particularly with regard to its use in cancer treatment and prevention. Inositol is a naturally occurring substance derived from soybeans and grains, like rice, corn, and wheat. In nature, IP-6 is a powerful antioxidant that protects and preserves seeds over a long duration. Seeds, for example, have been known to last for more than one hundred years and still germinate due to the preservative effects of IP-6. Furthermore, the clinical value of IP-6 in cancer prevention has been investigated for over the last four years and more than two-dozen studies have been conducted at numerous laboratories around the world.

The bulk of the information in this book is provided in a "FAQ and Cancer Letter" format. The authors answer questions from patients about their cancers and the role of IP-6 therapy with overall suggestions for cancer prevention. The IP-6 book covers why people should take this supplement and compares it with green tea for its ability to reduce cellular aberrations and prevent cancer. As an anti-oxidant, IP-6 appears to be even more powerful than green tea. There is a discussion of the cancer research done by Drs. Shamsuddin and Ullah on IP-6 as reported in several peer-reviewed journals, such as "Carcinogenesis" and "Nutrition and Cancer." Its effects on many different types of cancers are presented.

The authors discuss the politics of cancer prevention and suggest that the National Cancer Institute should be doing more in the area of prevention, particularly regarding environmental, diet, and life-style issues.

The authors also present data on the use of IP-6 in biliary cirrhosis, kidney stones, reduction of cholesterol levels, pregnancy, the possibility of interaction with prescription drug(s), OTC drug(s), and supplements, and how IP-6 compares with other cancer therapies. Lastly, there is a dosage regimen on how to use IP-6 with Inositol, as well as how patients can obtain this dietary supplement at health food stores.

Overall, "IP-6 with Inositol" is one of the first consumer books to cover this interesting and valuable supplement. This book makes an otherwise difficult topic extremely easy to understand for the layman who is seeking to learn the advantages of IP-6 as a potential anti-cancer supplement.

This review is from: Nature's Ultimate Anti-Cancer Pill: The IP-6 with Inositol Question and Answer Book (Paperback)
Furthermore, the authors claim the product is safe for pregnant women and children. Children have need for minerals and IP6 might stunt their growth. Pregnant females must supply minerals for their growing fetus and use of IP6 may result in serious consequences. Beware of the advice in this book. IP6 is a wonderful antioxidant and mineral chelator and has widespread application for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and as an antibiotic, but it should be used for short periods of time, not as a daily supplement. There is scant evidence that one brand of IP6 is superior to another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Information. Exciting. Clear., July 2, 1999

This review is from: Nature's Ultimate Anti-Cancer Pill: The IP-6 with Inositol Question and Answer Book (Paperback)
I read this book in one setting. If you have cancer or know anyone who does, then this book is extremely important to read. The natural anticancer pill that the authors discuss is the real thing. I know because someone I know used it and their tumor disappeared. David Steinman is a consumer advocate whom I trust. Together with Dr. Coles, he is presenting information that everyone today needs. I highly recommend this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected., November 13, 2005
This review is from: Nature's Ultimate Anti-Cancer Pill: The IP-6 with Inositol Question and Answer Book (Paperback)
The information is mostly in the question and answer form, being heavier on the question side of it. There was not much of a discription of effects and side effects. There is only scant information about the dosages that are believed to be appropriate for many of the illnesses that were discussed in the question and answer area.

4.0 out of 5 stars Choices for IP-6, July 17, 2000
This review is from: Nature's Ultimate Anti-Cancer Pill: The IP-6 with Inositol Question and Answer Book (Paperback)
I would have to agree with the previous reviewer - the reader from California. The information given in this book IS thorough and comprehensive, yet there is a constant pushing of what seems to be their brand. The site, iHerb, has not only the author's promoted brand but others as well so readers and shoppers can make educated decisions.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Those Who Fear Cancer, June 20, 2009

This review is from: Nature's Ultimate Anti-Cancer Pill: The IP-6 with Inositol Question and Answer Book (Paperback)
Not many are aware of the promise that IP6 holds as a potential asset in controlling cancer. L. Stephen Coles and David Steinman are the authors of NATURE'S ULTIMATE ANTI-CANCER PILL: IP6 WITH INOSITOL. Their text is presented in a question and answer format, which in this case is a helpful adjunct to a similar text IP6: NATURE'S REVOLUTIONARY CANCER-FIGHTER by A. M. Shamsuddin. Where Shamsuddin tends toward the abstract and arcane, Coles and Steinman stick to an easy to read style that benefits greatly from the tight focus of each question and answer.

Coles and Steinman explain what IP6 is and how it operates to reduce the incidence and severity of diseases that are not necessarily limited to cancer. In fact, they claim that IP6 has a variety of uses that even now are only just beginning to be understood. Both writers present letters by cancer sufferers and survivors. Each letter writer asks a pointed question about IP6, usually with reference to its use, cost, dosage, and side effects. The answers indicate that IP6 is a safe, effective, and cheap alternative to traditional methods of cancer cure. I have two problems with this book. The first is that both Coles and Steinman admit that most of their statements are based on anecdotal evidence based on human subjects and empirical evidence on animal subjects. They readily admit that hard and convincing evidence based on replicable human subjects is sadly lacking though they assure the reader that the preponderance of such anecdotal evidence is convincing in the main. Second, they limit their recommendations to purchase IP6 only from two commercially available sources. The second objection is somewhat understandable since ten years have passed from the book's publication (1999) and there may indeed have been only those two firms involved in the manufacture and sale of IP6. The first objection is more difficult to dismiss, although there may have been advances in the field since then. In sum, IP6 is a supplement that holds enough promise for those who fear the onslaught of cancer to try it. This book (and Shamsuddin's) would be a good place to begin.
