2.0 out of 5 stars Too Sugary
This product has too much added sugar; thankfully, I have found one that doesn't add either real or artificial. Kids don't need sugar in everything!

This has become our first line of defense for those annoying colds that happen throughout the seasons. We were using it every day as a immune defense for my children, but with three kids that got a little expensive. We now use it at the first sign of a cold or other "bug" (runny nose, sneezing, etc.). They are usually better within 2 days of using the Sambucus. The one time we had run out, they had colds lasting 8 days! I couldn't wait to get more and now just buy a bottle every two months or so.
If we get what seems like a nasty bug, a dose of Sambucus with a lemon and honey will do the trick within 3 days at the most. Great product and one to keep on the shelf.
Very fair price here on Amazon as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Thing Ever, December 29, 2010

This thing really works. I never ever wrote any reviews online but felt obligated with this product. I have a 2 year old son and he got 7 ear infections last winter in 6 months. This year I decided to give this a try. We give him the daily dose every day and if I see a sign of runny nose, congestion or coughing, we go up to the intensive dose and it gets cleared in 2-3 days. It is just amazing. I am not also sure if this is just a coincidence (I want to believe that it is not) but it worked the last 4 times when he seemed like he was catching a cold. So I wanted to let all the moms know that this thing works and give it a try. It is so diffucult to deal with a child when they are sick and the whole family gets miserable especially if every month. It is end of December and knock on wood, we made it so far. I really hope that it works like this the rest of the winter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too much sugar, May 15, 2011
As far as effectiveness is concerned, this is a great product. I gave it to my son and his cold symptoms lessened within a day. I also took some when I started getting a sore throat, and it never materialized into a cold, sore throat gone the next day.

I took a star away, however, because it is way too sweet. Like sickeningly sweet, makes your eyes close and mouth pucker sweet. I don't know why it needs so much fructose, it's easily mixable into a drink or applesauce. I could not detect any "medicine-y" taste, but I'm not sure if that's because of all the sugar. Although, with other products I've tried where they tried to cover up the medicine taste with sugar, you can still taste the medicine. With this, I didn't detect anything, not even in the after taste. The only thing I tasted was, yes, you guessed it, SUGAR.

And sugar depresses your immune system, so having so much sugar is a bit counter productive.

I purchased the Sambucus Black Elderberry (Sugar-Free) 8 fl.oz version instead, for future use.

We have been using this for a while as my son goes to day care and brings all kinds of infections. It is great and works very well. Keep inmind it is not a drug but herbal suppliment and might not work well for everybody. However, most people we know say that it does help a lot and you should try it to find out. There are INTENSIVE care dose (when the child is alreday sick) and PREVENTIVE (if you are concerned that he or she was in contact with a sick person and might get sick). Tastes good, never had to force my kids to take it, they do it with pleasure...

We give this to our 2 year old as soon as he has a cold coming on, and it shortens the duration of the cold dramatically, and decreases the severity of his symptoms.

After going through one bottle of this with my kids, I went ahead and signed up for a subscription. I started using it with my boys when a raging head cold was going around. My boys did end up getting the cold, but they had a barely running nose for a few days, whereas my mom and some of our friends had horrible head colds that turned into ear and sinus infections and had to go on antibiotics. They are still struggling with this cold after about 2 weeks and it is long gone for us. (Yes, I told them about Sambucus, haha).

The taste is very sweet, but I mix it with a little cold water and my boys love it. It tastes like fruit punch when mixed with water.

The con is it is very expensive to use as a preventative measure (especially for a family of 5) so I plan on using this when a bug is going around or they start to show some symptoms.

I have a 5years old girl who is attending school.
As most mom knows, kids are sick very often when the winter begins.
My daughter is very peaky to eat so she is skinny.
I heard about this elderberry syrup and tried to use for her.
She likes to have this because taste is good.
Sometimes she wants to have more.
I'm very sure this works for those kids.
When she has symtoms of cold, I give her twice a day.
Then the symtoms are gone.
It's very amazing and pleasure to use this every day.
I just want share this with you.Nature's Way Sambucus for Kids, Berry Flavored, 8 Ounce

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Alternative to OTC Meds, January 14, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nature's Way Sambucus for Kids, Berry Flavored, 8 Ounce (Health and Beauty)
When my daughter (who has seasonal allergies) started kindergarten, our entire family was hit with a nasty bout of colds, that lingered and lingered. It seemed as if we'd start to get over it then BAM we'd all get sick again.

While the pediatrician had given us dosage information for OTC cold medications for both my five-year-old and almost-three-year-old, I wasn't comfortable giving them these meds constantly.

So I tried Sinupret Syrup for Kids 3.38 fl oz based on a recommendation from Dr. Sears' site. But it is alcohol-based and tasted TERRIBLE. Neither of the kids would take it willingly, and I didn't want to give them something with alcohol in it.

Then I found Sambucus. It tastes GREAT, and has worked both for daily allergy treatment for my eldest, and for treatment for colds. Yes, it has sugar in it, but personally I would rather they have sugar than alcohol (or artificial sweeteners or other chemicals found in OTC meds). Tastes a bit like a popsicle, but without the HFCS or artificial dyes.

Bottom line: it works and is palatable, and the best alternative I've found to other "natural" and OTC alternatives.
