5.0 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC STANDARDIZED PRODUCT FOR THE PROSTATE: BUT A BIT ON THE PRICEY SIDE, March 20, 2006
This review is from: Nature's Way - Standard. Saw Palmetto Extract, 160 mg, 60 softgels (Health and Beauty)
IN A NUTSHELL: EXCELLENT PRODUCT BUT MORE ECONOMICAL CHOICES EXIST

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is treated effectively with standardized Saw Palmetto extract, which is what this product is -- 160 mg. 85-95% standardized for "Fatty Acids". Saw Palmetto is also used as an adjunct for Prostatitis (NBP), which is very similar to BPH and is usually something that occurs as a companion to chronic BPH.

NUTRITIONAL THERAPIES THAT CAN BE COMBINED WITH SAW PALMETTO FOR BETTER RESULTS ACCORDING TO HEALTHNOTES - 2006:

EXCELLENT DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE FOR THE USE OF:

Beta-sitosterol, Rye Pollen extract, Saw palmetto

DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE FOR THE USE OF:

Amino acids (alanine, glutamic acid, glycine), Garlic (Kastamonu Garlic), Nettle, Pumpkin seeds, Pygeum

ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE FOR THE USE OF:

Copper, Flaxseed oil, Zinc

MY PERSONAL COMBINATION [Robert uses this NOT me as this is FOR MEN ONLY]

---*- Saw Palmetto - Standardized [85%] - 160 mg. - 4x daily,

---*- Nettle Root [2] 500 mg. Raw Herb - 4x daily,

---*- Pygeum Standardized [13%Sterols] 100 mg. - 2-3x daily

---*- High Lignan Flax Oil - 1 tablespoon Daily

---*- Zinc Picolinate - 50 mg. 1x daily

---*- Pumpkin Seed - Certified Organic - 1 oz. - 1x daily

ABOUT BRANDS: STANDARDIZED DOSE FIRST - BRAND SECOND - COST THIRD

"Nature's Way Saw Palmetto, 160 mg. Standardized Extract Caps", is the gold standard for Saw Palmetto as is usually the case for Nature's Way products. However, it is expensive, as this bottle is really only a supply for 2 weeks @ $10.43 or about $21. per month.

"Now", "Swanson" and "The Vitamin Shoppe" all offer similar products for much less, and are available via Amazon just as this product is. If you don't want to buy this on-line, Sam's Club offers about the best deal on this same dose in a standardized product. Right now they offer 350, 160 mg. soft-gels, standardized to 85% for about $11.!

ABOUT THE VENDOR:

The "Vitamin Shoppe" offers good service, and low prices on name brands and their own house brand too. In this instance however, I would avoid their house brand as it is not standardized, though they offer a very good price on 300 softgels. I have ordered products from them in the past and without any problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Avoid Male Pattern Baldness, December 5, 2007
This review is from: Nature's Way - Standard. Saw Palmetto Extract, 160 mg, 60 softgels (Health and Beauty)
"Nature's Way Saw Palmetto

First, I am not a doctor and I do not play one on TV, but I have done a lot of research. Saw Palmetto blocks the breakdown of testosterone down the pathway that forms DHT, which can cause male pattern baldness and erectile dysfunction due to BPH

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop Male pattern baldness, May 18, 2007

Saw Palmetto blocks testosterone from forming DHT, dihydro-testosterone,

which causes male-patterned balness and BPH, benign prostate hypertrophy. It is something every adult male should take. I have been taken it for twenty years or so and I have all my own hair and no problems with BPH( BTW, I'm 60 years old). You'll find it in all vitamins formulated for adult men for a reason. There might not be enough to be effective in your multi-vitamin, however.
