I was nervous about moving from a semi-permanent hair color to a permanent hair color, and I wanted a product that was as natural (for both me & the environment) as possible. I can highly recommend this product! (at least for the color I use - Light Chestnut). It makes my hair feel soft, shiny, and healthy. I also tried another natural hair color by Tints of Nature, and while it colored my hair just as well, my hair didn't feel as healthy (more dried out, less strong - my hair is fine and I wear it long, so this is important). Naturtint includes a conditioner/color-setting product, and I think this might be part of why it's better. I also think Naturtint smells better (less chemical-ly). I do find, however, that I have to leave the product on my hair for the longer amount of time listed on the directions (30 min. instead of 20) to cover grey more successfully and last longer. Anyway, I wished someone had written a review like this when I was trying to choose products, so here's one for someone else!

This is one of those products that claims to be natural and free of harsh chemicals, but actually doesn't mention that it contains one of the worst chemicals for your health: Phenylenediamine, or PPD.

I have used this hair color at least three times, and I love the actual color (that is why this gets two stars instead of just one). I chose this brand because I thought it was natural and safe, which is what the package advertises. However, I did not understand why this "natural" product would cause my scalp to itch for several days, sometimes weeks at a time (as with my latest use). I did a bit of research, and found that this product contains Phenylenediamine / PPD, which is an aniline dye also known as a coal tar dye. Basically, it is petroleum. It is a substance used in rubber chemicals, photo developer, oil, gasoline, ink, textile dyes, and, of course, hair dye. The only legal use of PPD in cosmetics is as a hair dye. It is not approved for direct application to the skin by the FDA!! Hair dye is in direct contact with the skin for sometimes up to 30 minutes. The FDA apparently feels that it is unsafe to use PPD for uses such as tattoos but safe enough to apply directly onto your scalp.

I just used this color for the last time two days ago, and my scalp is itching like crazy. Reading about further side effects that my develop with continued use has scared me. I will never use it again. I hope that you are choosing this product because of the color, and NOT because it is "natural" and completely safe, because that is an untruth promoted by misleading marketing.

I have been using this haircolor for 9 years. I can't be without it. I started using it because I wanted something that was safer and more gentle. I find that if I use a little less of the developer, the color lasts longer. This is a great product and I highly recommend it!!

This so-called "natural" hair color still contains the 3 most toxic ingredients: Resorcinol, p-Phenylenediamine, and phthalates in the parfum. I am appalled that this is even considered "safer". wow....Google any of these ingredients and you will get an eye-opener. No wonder they don't list the ingredients on the box.

From the online ingredient list: Parfum (Fragrance). (+/-) p-Phenylenediamine, 4-Amino-2-Hydroxytolueno.p-Aminophenol, 2-Methyl-Resorcinol, m-Aminophenol, 4-Chloro Resorcinol, N,N-Bis (Hydroxyethyl)-p-Phenylenediamine Sulfate, 2-Amino-4-Hydroxy-Ethylaminoanisole Sulfate.

I've been using this product for ages and purchasing it at Whole Foods at a higher cost. I get great results by doing this: use half of the product and apply it to the roots. After 20 minutes, add a little water and massage the mixture into the rest of your hair for about 3 minutes. (Get some decent latex gloves for this. The ones in the box are hard to work with.) Then rinse and shampoo as normal. All over color at 100% is too harsh. With this little 3 minute diluted mixture out to the ends, you get a great color that doesn't look like shoe polish. Perfect! Even my hairdresser says it looks professional.

Great product without ammonia - doesn't burn you eyes or your scalp - you can leave the bathroom door closed while you color - doesn't have strong odor or fumes. Scent is what I call neutral, it is not unpleasant. Does cover the gray very well, even at the tempels. It is hard to find the right color, will have to experiment. This color came out almost black on me at first, but did lighten a bit and softened. It cost me $16 at HEB. Does change the texture of your hair and tends to dry it out. The change in texture makes your hair appear thicker, but makes it feel kind of wierd too.You might want to use a good quality conditioning treatment often with this hair coloring product.

On a whim I decided to try this hair colorant. It was very easy to apply, it did not sting or burn my scalp, it was pleasant smelling. I should say that I had let my hair grow out to it's natural color for over a year (mousy brown gray) because I was tired of spending both the time and the $120 at Aveda salons.
I am glad I chose a lighter color, mine was in fact golden honey blonde, the permanent colorant. My hair turned out much darker than I expected after leaving the colorant on for the full 20 minutes. It certainly does cover the gray! And the gray hair does appear a bit lighter than the rest of my hair - which is fine. The color is very rich and deep. A bit too much for what I was expecting, however I will say that I can't see any difference between this product and the very expensive treatments I used to have at Aveda salons. I would use it again, and perhaps mix it with an even lighter shade of blonde. Or - leave it on for less time. I wouldn't hesitate to try it again, although I will also say that I look forward to it's lightening up a bit after shampooing. It's supposed to fade out between 3- 5 weeks. I would also like to add that every once and awhile I was surprised at how my "regular" color turned out at the salon - perhaps that's due to the nature of my hair. If you are interested in trying this product, perhaps choose a shade or 2 lighter at first or don't leave it on as long if you don't want such an vibrant color. Also, the other reviewer's tip on using the conditioner was well advised, I think it did make my hair softer after the process. Some reviewers thought they needed 2 bottles, my hair is also thick and shoulder length and one bottle was more than enough for me.
