Gameplay Where It Pays to be Bad

4.0 out of 5 stars If only the camera worked..., July 1, 2010

I played this game for a couple of hours earlier today. Before playing, I had pictured a cute and cuddly version of Manhunt. I wasn't far off; you do get to cause general mayhem on a wide assortment of Care Bear wannabe's. So far, the game play has been enjoyable, but I can see it getting a bit repetitive after a while.

My one big complaint so far is the camera. At times, the camera seems to be playing a different game than I am. It will get hung regularly behind walls and doors. Granted, you can recenter the camera with a single button click, but when fighting an enemy in a doorway you will want to break your controller in two.

The camera problem is not a deal-breaker, though. I started to adjust to it as I played more. Overall, it's a good game, although I think the price may drop fairly quickly. Pick it up when it's $20.

1.0 out of 5 stars I never thought I would give a video game a one-star review..., July 6, 2010
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Naughty Bear (Video Game)
A few people have already said that this game is kind of a love it or hate it. And before I give my take on it, I have to say that it's not so much that I hate it, per se, but more that I just found it incredibly boring. And I PRE-ORDERED this game, I thought it looked insanely fun, and the idea that you are a teddy bear that goes around murdering other teddy bears just sounds really funny and entertaining. The only reason this game earns two stars in the fun department is because the animations of Naughty Bear killing the other bears with various weapons is entertaining the first couple times.

The good:
-Cartoon violence
-Narrated by an Englishman
-Happy music, which juxtaposes the murder in-game

The bad:
-Narrated by an Englishman (who says the same things over and over again when you kill bears)
-Repetitive
-No plot

I have never really played a game before that I thought was boring. Usually no matter how one-dimensional a game is, I can put up with it for ten hours or so until it's over. I have never just wanted a game to be over, in my entire life. And that's talking about a lot of video games. But with this...I don't know. I just expected a lot more from it. I guess I'm just a little shocked that the people who took the time to make this couldn't see what a mediocre game they were making. Again, this is just my opinion, but the fact that absolutely nothing drives the story (or lack of) is a deal-breaker in any genre. You just kill other bears. And that would be enough, if they allowed you to do it in fun and creative ways. There are numerous ways to kill the other bears, but when each level consists of killing all the bears, you're going to run through all of the weapons available, and you're going to keep seeing the same kill animations over and over and over again. I don't know how people can find that fun for more than fifteen or twenty minutes at a time...but I suppose there are.

Do not spend $50 on this game. If you really want to play it, rent it. And if you buy it, don't spend more than $10. Naughty Bear looked so cool, such an original title, and then for it to essentially fall right on its face is a huge letdown. People might say I just don't get it, that the killing is an ends and not a mean to that end, that topping your high score by playing repeatedly is what is really the most fun part of the game. But for me, I could barely stomach playing each level once.

3.0 out of 5 stars Agree with other reviewers . . . but I like it., November 15, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Naughty Bear (Video Game)
When I saw the preview for this game, I was excited on the prospects of being a serial killing Teddy Bear (a la Manhunt). Overall, it didn't exactly deliver as I suspected, but I still enjoy it. I agree with some of the complaints from other reviewers on the repetitiveness of the levels, and I have also had some camera issues where it gets disorienting after the kill scene is played. But when you really get into a groove and begin a string of mayhem, it's pretty fun. Some of the reactions of the other bears to your rampage and some of the kill scenes are downright HILARIOUS!! For me, this isn't a game where I play it for a couple of weeks straight to finish it since there isn't a overall storyline that you need to finish. I've been playing it off and on for about a month now and I find that just popping it in for a change of pace is pretty enjoyable.

Overall, a pretty cool game taken in periodically. I also agree that this game isn't really worth it at full price. If you can get it for $20 or less I'd say snap it up, if only to have something to play when you get burnt on Halo, COD, GTA, etc.
