My son laughed....,
By DD67 "babyonahill" (Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Naughty Little Monkeys (Hardcover)
With every turn of the page, my son laughed. This book was great. I have a paperback from Scholastic magazine, but I feel the hardcover book is well worth the price as the naughty monkeys get into all sorts of trouble. Several of the naughty monkeys do things that my son has gotten into trouble for, like cutting his hair and drawing on the walls. Great for letter recognition, and beginning letter sound. Each monkey has a name that begins with the letter sound and each monkey gets into trouble also reinforcing the letter sound. My son likes all the naughty monkeys, but one of his favorites is Robin. "Naughty little Monkey, Tracking up the rug. Her feet are very muddy from some holes that she has dug." Robin is carrying in a shovel full of dirt and you can see out the open door that she has dug holes in the yard and she has muddy foot prints all over. Very funny and very good art work.

Learn some alphabet while laughing at monkeys,
By Emily Hawkins "moreta2" (Indianapolis, Indiana, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Naughty Little Monkeys (Hardcover)
What would happen if a human couple adopted 26 monkey children, dressed them in pajamas, sent them to bed and went out for the night? This book goes through each monkey's naughty antics throughout the house. The monkey's all have their names on their shirts, corresponding with the letter on the page, alphabetically. The naughty thing each monkey does also has something to do with his letter. (Jennifer writes her name on the table with JAM. Emily's wearing Mommy's EARRINGS.) This book would be good for reading time with your youngster. They'll enjoy the monkeys and get a kick out of the pictures.

Dirty Little Monkeys,

My child loves this book. She is 2 and first found it at the library. She was disappointed when it had to be returned so I went out looking for it. It is a book about monkeys being left at home and it takes the child through the alphabet. It does this by the names of the monkeys. My daughter loves it because my name is attached to a monkey. She can't put this book down.

The husband and wife in this entertaining story are just leaving as the monkeys are tucked into bed. The tucking job wasn't at all successful, and every monkey in the night of mischief and messes is naughty. The rhymes describing the miscreat deeds are catchy and clever. The misdeeds are just bad enough to be funny, and the illustrations are marvelous. The returning couple has a great solution, and it creates a neat surprise ending.

I'm not sure...,

Listen, here's what's up. If YOU had 26 small children to take care of (human children, not even MONKEY children!), would YOU leave them all night without a babysitter?
I didn't think so. Really, the parents had it coming. When their children dive into the bathtub to make a big splash, when they write their names with jam, when they leave the fridge open and ruin the curtains (and all in alphabetical order, too!), I know whose fault it is. THE PARENTS. The alphabet theme is a little understated here - it's a fun addition, but they're not announcing in big letters A is for APPLES and ANDY throwing an AIRPLANE on each page. There's a 4 line rhyme with the alliterative word in bold, and that's about it. (The names of the monkeys are on their pajama shirts.) The pictures are amusing enough, but to tell the truth I didn't like the language that much. It seemed a little... like I've seen it all before. It could have been better. And I didn't like the rhyme for Z, either. Not only did the 26th monkey not get to do anything, but they were all taken (in pink dresses for the girls and blue sailor suits for the boys) to the zoo as... a treat? That's how it reads, with them walking along with balloons and umbrellas. I know it's Mom and Dad's fault the house is such a mess, but still... shouldn't they be punished just a little? Maybe by having to STAY HOME and clean it up? (Unless they're being brought to the zoo to be abandoned there for being so naughty, which makes sense but WOW what a message.) I don't know, it's just not sitting right. And like I said, the rhymes? I've read better. Nice artwork, though.

We purchased this book as part of a required summer reading list for my son's school. At first look I thought this would be "yet another alphabet book." But I soon discovered, when reading with my 5-year-old, that this book was fun, engaging, creatively written, and creatively illustrated. We've enjoyed it immensely.
