Book Description

4 and up

Nancy's mother has to drag her to school, but once there, Nancy -- who is full of high spirits -- finds ways to amuse herself and the other students. In the classroom, she imitates the teacher behind her back. In the schoolyard, she climbs up onto the roof to retrieve a ball -- only to have the ball roll off the roof and hit the teacher! On a class trip to the beach, Nancy buries the napping teacher in sand up to her neck. But in the end, Nancy wins even the teacher's favor when she performs a brave and unselfish act.

In this companion to Naughty Nancy, John Goodall's beautiful watercolor paintings capture the spirit of classroom lessons, field trips, and schoolyard fun. Children will delight in turning the pages of this wordless book -- and the half-pages that forward the action -- to follow Nancy, as she sometimes accidentally, sometimes deliberately, gets herself into trouble.

Amazon.com Review

Words can't begin to describe just how naughty Nancy the mouse is. In fact, words don't describe her naughtiness... In John S. Goodall's wordless picture book, the entire story is told through exquisite and humorous watercolor paintings. Nancy is dragged by her determined-looking mother through the gates of school, to be met by the matronly bell- and stick-wielding teacher. But no sooner has Nancy's mother left the premises when her irrepressible daughter starts acting up and acting out. Mimicking her teacher, climbing onto the roof to retrieve a ball (that she hit up there, of course), tormenting her classmates on a field trip to the shore, Nancy is a menace. And yet, when another young mouse finds himself in dire straits, it turns out Nancy has a bit of a valiant, selfless heroine in her, as well.

The reprinting of many of John Goodall's wordless books (Naughty Nancy, The Midnight Adventures of Kelly, Dot, and Esmeralda, Shrewbettina's Birthday, etc.) is a windfall for imaginative beginning readers. Children can make up the words to the story as they go along, changing it as they notice new details, or according to their own mood or whim. Half pages alternate with full pages to advance the story--young readers will be intrigued by this unusual format. The mice's old-fashioned attire is nicely coordinated with the oh-so-modern mischief. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly

The British artist's new wordless book records, in his shimmering watercolors, the latest capers of that misbehaving Victorian mouse, Nancy. As in Goodall's previous small delights, half-pages hide secrets for readers to discover when Nancy's mother takes the imp to school. The teacher can't turn her back for fear NN will perpetrate mischief. At recess, Nancy clobbers a brawny lad; she climbs to the schoolhouse roof, leaps off and knocks the teacher down. An outing at the beach gives the child more chances to be stroppy but she redeems herself, finally. Rescuing a tot from drowning, Nancy beams and blushes as she accepts, before cheering crowds, a splendid trophy for heroism, presented by a royal personage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wordless Book, July 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Naughty Nancy Goes to School (Hardcover)
My children loved this book as toddlers and still enjoy this book as lower elementary school students.

What's unique about this book? No words and half pages. Why do children love the book? Naughty Nancy is always in trouble, just like most young children--not because she is bad, she is just curious and fun-loving. All children can identify with her. The wordless format allows the adult reader to make the story as detailed or as simple as necessary to interest the child. Pictures are in full color, detailed, and amusing.

My children checked them out repeatedly from the public library and until recently, they were out of print. If you like this, try other books by John Goodall such as Paddy Pork.

Ahh, Nancy is so very naughty. Not quite an Eloise, but only because there are no words. Children will giggle with this - especially when Nancy becomes a hero. You just never know what lurks in one's heart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great books, October 14, 2005
This review is from: Naughty Nancy Goes to School (Hardcover)
I 'read' Naughty Nancy when I was little- these are hysterical stories, where the scene changed when you turn the 1/2 page. Nancy gets into tons of trouble everywhere she goes- it's just a great series.
