If you like Zane, you'll enjoy this book. Unfortunately, it is yet another fiction book relying more on shocking vulgar words and sexual acts instead of a story line. The book read more like a porno, and less like a well-crafted novel. When you read this book it feels like you are reading about today...the things that are happening on this day are also happening in his book. For instance he mentions the Kobe Bryant case, and a couple of other things that are happening today in 2003! It's really a great book. I would advise anyone who enjoys good reading to purchase it!

Thank You.

5.0 out of 5 stars He does it again!!, November 10, 2003

Again, I have to say congrats on a perfect book! "Naughty or Nice" is off the chain. I read it in one day! Just to let you know though, "The Other Woman" has to be one of the best books on relationships dealing with adultery that I have ever read. Or maybe even relationships period!

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT A CHRISTMAS TALE, BUT STILL A GOOD READ., December 22, 2003
By
ANDRENA G. DANCER (UPLAND, CA United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Naughty or Nice (Hardcover)
I always look forward to a new novel by Eric Jerome Dickey, having read all of his previous published works, and found NAUGHTY OR NICE to be up to his expected standards.

Although the novel was not really a Christmas story as promoted (despite its occasional reference to the holiday season), it was a fascinating relationship tale nevertheless--from the candid exploration of step-sister interactions, to the less revealing glimpse into the trials experienced between friends, lovers, parents, and spouses.

As usual, the dialogue was crisp, the characters realistic, and the plot absorbing. The novel's single flaw was the ending--not because it was too "rushed", as expressed by other readers, but because it was incongruous with the tone and temperament of the rest of the novel. For example, "Panther" devolved from an exciting young woman into a caricature, and the tarnish splashed on "Carpe's" true nature served only to render "Livvy" a fool--at least in regard to her people-reading skills.

If EJD had ended this novel at the point just three sentences shy of the second to the last chapter (the chapters weren't numbered after all) and omitted the last chapter altogether, then the book would have been a much better read. No one is perfect, though, and NAUGHTY OR NICE is definitely a keeper.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, December 5, 2003
This review is from: Naughty or Nice (Hardcover)
If you like Zane, you'll enjoy this book. Unfortunately, it is yet another fiction book relying more on shocking vulgar words and sexual acts instead of a story line. The book read more like a porno, and less like a well-crafted novel. During the times when Dickey reminded me of how well he is at dialogue, controversy, and making the plot thicken, here comes another sex scene to water down the whole novel. I also didn't care for him biting off the movie "Soul Food" with the book being three sisters, a sister named Bird, and a "Big Momma". Word of Advice: No one cares about the sex scenes unless we care about the characters. I wasn't excited nor apalled to read the sex scenes, it felt more like hearsay and I was thinking "Who cares?"
The acknowledgement page was more interesting than the WHOLE book. I enjoy Dickey as an author but his last two books weren't well-developed (character-wise). The one time I actually wanted to read about two people getting intimate, it was cut off (hint: one flies, the other is a color, burn mark) and the dialogue was intelligent without vulgar words being thrown all over the place. When you curse, make it count. Otherwise, it sounds like filth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Steamy and sexy, but average work for EJD, December 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Naughty or Nice (Hardcover)
I'm a big fan of EJD and like most of the reviewers, I've read all of his books. I'd have to agree with those who say that The Other Woman was his best book to date and the better of the two books that he released in 2003. If you are new to EJD, I recommend reading The Other Woman first.

Naughty or Nice was cute and a light story. Livvy's affair is defintely very steamy, Tommie's little romance is cute, and Frankie's dating life is comical. The story isn't as deep as some of his other novels, but this makes for a good light read as you are traveling during the holidays or just looking to relax with some light entertainment. There are a couple of surprises at the end, but nothing earth shattering.

I do appreciate how EJD always gives us a new look at affairs and betrayal. This novel made me reflect on my own life and the kind of spouse I strive to be. I liked his theme that marriage is about "the end" and how he made the point that sometimes the one we choose to settle down with isn't "perfect", but neither are we.

Bottom line is that you can afford the risk with this novel. For about the same price as a movie ticket, I got three night's worth of entertaining reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars EJD HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!, December 10, 2003
This review is from: Naughty or Nice (Hardcover)
I am a HUGE EJD fan! I couldn't wait to buy this book! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down! I would read on the way to work, at work, and when I got home from work. It's amazing how real his books and characters are. Being from California, I was on the 10 and the 5 freeways with the marvelous McBroom sisters. I agree with one of the "reviewers" when he/she said that there should be a sequel to this book. I want to know how the relationship between Tommie and Blue works out. I want to know how things end for Livvy. And, I want to know what the heck's going on with Frankie! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a true to life story. An A+ all the way! Can't wait for the next one!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas tale without all the Christmas Glitz., February 22, 2006
By
This review is from: Naughty or Nice (Hardcover)
This is a great book but not the best of his work, it is filled with action, laughter, and even a little intrigue. The book focuses on three sisters, and each chapter is filled with their first person account of their lives, and their encounters with the Internet, and life in general.

If you want action, and passion and intrigue, then you will love the Livvy chapters!!!, She is the dominate character, so there are many chapters filled with her day -to -day drama. One particular love scene is nearly 4 pages LONG... I was very impressed with Eric Jerome Dickey's passionate details of her Internet love affair.

If you want Humor, then you will be laughing until you cry with the Frankie chapters!!! Her internet encounters are so hilariously funny! There is one chapter where she meets a man she thinks is Mr. Right Now, until his former lover interrupts their date. In another chapter she meets a man that has sent her a false photo. Believe me you will certainly laugh your head off!!!

The Tommie chapters are more serine, and not nearly as exciting, but important to the story. I agree with one of the "reviewers" when he/she said that there should be a sequel to this book. I want to know how the relationship between Tommie and Blue works out. I want to know how things end for Livvy. And, I want to know what the heck's going on with Frankie!

If you want to read a Christmas tale, without all the Christmas this is the one for you, but if you think this book has a lot of hot steamy sex that everyone else is talking about, well it leaves a lot to be desired. This book is just a good fast read. Happy reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars EJD Can't Stop, Won't Stop!!, November 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Naughty or Nice (Hardcover)
What can I say that my fellow reviewers haven't already said? This book does not disappoint. It keeps your attention from beginning to end, you won't want to put it down. Great Christmas novel about the three "McBroom Sisters", decorated with just the right amount of drama, Los Angeles as the backdrop. The chapters move at a steady flow, the women speak to you as if you know them. I don't know how Dickey captures the entire being of a women so well in his novels but read his acknowledgments at the end and you may or may not find the answer :-). Bottom line, buy this book for you, your momma, and your girlfriend. Consider it a pre-Christmas, pre-Kwanzaa, pre-Hannukah, pre-whatever you want to call it type of gift. It's well worth the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars I love EJD, but...., September 26, 2005
By
This review is from: Naughty or Nice (Hardcover)
I just didn't like it. My first EJD book was Cheaters I read that and fell in love; since then I've been reading all of his books in order of publication: Sister Sister, Friends and Lovers, Milk in My Coffee, Liars Game, Between Lovers, Thieves' Paradise, and the Other Woman. Over all I enjoyed all of the books but this one just didn't hit me. I usually back up my obsession with EJD by saying that I'm reading his books because they all have depth and meanings and that with each one I learn a little bit about myself; but I just can't say any of that about this one. Usually after reading one of his books I want to know more about the characters, I wonder about what they are doing what happened later. The characters in this one just didn't do it for me; I could care less what happens to them. The book wasn't horrible it just wasn't what I've come to expect from EJD. It would have been good from another author but when you pick up EJD you expect great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, October 30, 2004
This review is from: Naughty or Nice (Hardcover)
"Naughty or Nice" is the story of three sister, Frankie, Livvy and Tommie. We are taken into the hearts of these young women as they struggle to make sense of their lives, their shattered loves and the loss of their loved ones.
The sisters draw strength from past memories of their beloved mother and father and even though they might not want to admit it, they learn how much they need each other, and how deep the bond of sisterhood goes.

At times this book is quite spicy and intense as we invade the lives of these sisters, and the author shows that in a family each can be different, with different needs and desires, however, the end result for them was a deeper commitment to one another and understanding to what is important.
Sex, love, hate, and life all tangled up in this steamy read, unraveled for the reader as they learn the bond of sisterhood.
