5.0 out of 5 stars Naughty Songs is a classic
As a teenager in the early 80's I bought the LP version of this for my sister's tenth birthday. I hadn't yet heard it, but comparing it to the other kiddy records and knowing my sister would probably play it continuously for the next few months made me think I could probably stand hearing songs like "My Mother Ran Away Today" over and over rather than the Strawberry...

1.0 out of 5 stars um, wow
I bought this CD after reading a bunch of rave reviews on here. I mean A LOT of good, excited reviews. I love the song Barry sings on the Juno soundtrack and was looking for more of the same. I popped the CD in the van and my husband looked at me like I was crazy. We both thought the CD SUCKED BAD. Now I'm mad that I even wasted the money on it - times are tough you know...

As a teenager in the early 80's I bought the LP version of this for my sister's tenth birthday. I hadn't yet heard it, but comparing it to the other kiddy records and knowing my sister would probably play it continuously for the next few months made me think I could probably stand hearing songs like "My Mother Ran Away Today" over and over rather than the Strawberry Shortcake Rap or whatever insipid swill was passing as wholesome family entertainment. Not only did I stand it, but I actually liked this record. It was subversive and musical enough to satisfy me and silly enough to make my sister happy. Probably the only song we ever sang together was "Never Cook Your Sister in a Frying Pan." Twenty years later I have children of my own. To this day I admonish my kids singing "Don't Put Your Finger Up Your Nose," though I had forgotten most of the words and none of my family had heard the original until we came across the cassette of this at the local library last week. Everyone enjoyed listening to the album, laughing and singing along with nearly every tune (I admit I even like the sweet songs). Thus I feel compelled to say something favorable on behalf of Polisar's collection of good humored folksy songs. It's too bad the negative reviews here resort to insult and hyperbole. That probably says more about the commentators than the record itself. Fortunately this isn't another Loony Tunes, Strawberry Shortcake, Pokemon or Disney record. It is lovingly hand-crafted idiosyncratic fun in the vein of Shel Siverstein or Roald Dahl. I guess it isn't for everyone. Grandma always said I had a puny sense of humor which may explain the appeal. I don't know much about human emotions or connections to children but this record made enough of a positive impression on my family that I decided to make my first comment on Amazon in praise of Polisar's classic.

I had a copy of the original release of this ablum when I was a kid. About ten years ago the tape broke, and after searching, I gave up all hope of ever finding another copy. This is one of the best silly albums for kids (young and old) that I have ever heard. Hilarious, ridiculous, and hysterically FUN. WARNING: NOT FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT A SENSE OF HUMOR!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, October 12, 1999

We recieved this as a gift and it was a huge hit! Our children range in age from 3 to 8 and they all enjoy it, so do the adults. The songs remind me of Shel Silverstein's poetry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hiliarious! Maybe funnier for adults than children., September 17, 1999

Barry Louis Polisar has captured the very emotions of childhood in these spontaneous songs. If you listen to all the words, you could be laughing through the whole album!

If you're looking for a kids' album that won't drive you insane hearing it for the gazzillionth time, this album is for you.

If you think having a slightly naughty side of your own isn't such a bad thing, this is the album for you.

If you have an inner child tied up in a sack just dying to come out, this is the album for you.

If you think 4 year olds could do a better job running things most days, this is the album for you.

If you have unresolved childhood issues and would love to blow raspberries at the world from time to time, this is the album for you.

If your tired of souless, techno-dance music and would love a melody to sing along with, this is the album for you.

If you can imagine Jim Henson as Puck from a Mid Summer Night's Dream, this is the album for you.

If you want to buy this album, listen to it, love it or hate it, just to shut me up, this is the album for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I too grew up with this album, July 5, 2007

Someone, my mom I think, bought me this album, in record form, when I was a kid. I played that thing for years and LOVED it. I can still remember most of the songs, and sing some of them to my 3 year old. She loves "don't stick your finger in your nose." I'll be picking up a cd for her soon, perhaps for her birthday. Personally I find nothing offensive in his music. Only humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A throwback to when we weren't so darn sensitive!, March 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This guy played my pre-school to a packed house and I remember it vividly. We had the albums and played them in our neighbors basement incessantly. I directly blame (or credit) Barry for my sense of humor even now as I purchase this album for my son. Barry teaches that everything doesn't have to be so darn serious and we really don't have to tip toe around everybody afraid that we might ruffle a few feathers. The world is an absurd place and Barry gets kids ready to laugh it all off when things get out of control!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Terrific! Bravo for Naughty Songs., September 19, 2005
I have four children and we listen to this CD in the car all the time. Our favorite songs are: Thump, Thump, Thump; You can't say pthhht on the radio; Don't Cook Your Sister in A Frying Pan and The Poetry Lesson. It is a fun compilation of catchy tunes, with clever lyrics. It would also make a great gift.

Too funny, you have to listen to the songs to really appreciate the audio. I have remembered some of these songs for 15 years without hearing them til I found this CD. "Never Cook Your Sister in a Frying Pan" is a timeless classic. Not for the serious and not for the very young, but always for the silly and young at heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun! For all ages to enjoy!, February 21, 2004
Barry Polisar is a fantastic poet, musician and a great advocate for kids! I was really impressed with his performance at our elementary school this past week and logged on to buy a few of his CD's. I am getting "Naughty Songs for Boys and Girls" and "Teacher's Favorites" for my fifth grade classroom. The students just absolutely loved his performance! Lots of energy, incredibly zany lyrics and a good message about accepting differences seems to be his theme. Hilarious and irreverent, adults and kids loved his program. He had us in stitches the whole hour. Mr. Polisar sang serveral of his songs, recited a few of his poems and talked about what it means to be a writer. He answered numerous questions that the students had about being a writer and becoming a writer. Very patient man with a lot of talent that he shares freely. He told the students about being a parent and touring the country talking to school children. What he had to say about writing made a lot of sense to them. He has several great books out, one great book my students loved was "A Little Less Noise." Some of the songs from this great book of poetry are found on the "Teacher's Favorites" CD. My students cracked up so hard and loved hearing the book, that I simply must buy "Teacher's Favorites" to go along with the book of poetry. As a teacher, I recommend Polisar highly to children and families with a sense of humor. Children love his poems and songs. His performance was unique and a complete blast. Most of all, kids seem to love to laugh and have a good time with his books, poetry and songs.
